A310 alternator/regulator wiring problem. HELP!!!!

:( Hi chaps
I have one of the ex-DeLorean A310's (used as test mules for the DMC-12), which originally had an alternator with separate regulator. The alternator died at last year's superb AGC 86 club Rallye Touristique. Sadly the old unit could not be resurrected, so I bought a new one. The new one has a regulator built in, but with no time to investigate (OK, I didn't even think about it - it fits the car!) I put it on and left for the following day's thrash around La Vigeant circuit here in West France. The battery gauge shows a constant discharge and I therefore don't even know if it is charging. Battery is new and starts the car without a problem.

Please advise how I can remove/disconnect/rewire the original regulator so that confidence returns and I have a working battery meter again (and hopefully, charging too).

Hi there,
More than a few years ago I came across a similiar situatiion on a R4, but the replacement alternator came with fitting instructions to adapt remote unit to the on board unit.
If you can hold on a day or two (back to work on Saturday) I still have the information at work to carry out this adaption.

Thanks for the rapid reply. I can certainly wait.... I am on holiday in France (I have a house here - with an Alpine!) until 1st September. Rewiring on a small scale is no problem.

Early DeLoreans used the same 2-pin setup as Renault did on the Z7U (same plug too) with a 70A Ducellier alt. Later DeLoreans used a basic single pin setup on a unique 90A Motorola alternator which is now obsolete.

Both systems use the battery light in the same way - the light has one side on battery + and the other goes to the alternator. On the two pin GTA type, it goes on the larger of the two spades. The smaller one goes to a switched 12v which can be taken directly off the high side of the ignition ballast resistor.

You should be able to fit a GTA alt although you may have to swap the pulley for a V-belt type, and if you get stuck for a tensioner I can help you out with a DeLorean one that will fit. I do those alts for £159 outright.

The re wire is simple once I found the information in the toolbox.

What you need to do according to piece of paper is to identify the "EXC" on the external regulator and extend this to the "+" mark on the square two pin connection (other pin is marked "L")
I did try scanning the instructions but it wasn't all that clear so I have copied it via Microsoft word document so if you would like a copy PM your email and I will send you one.
Also there is some text in French at the bottom, which reads,


"Nota: Decrancher la batterie pour toute invervention sur le circuit Toute erreur de branchment du connecteur ou court-circuit entre les bomes detruit le regulateur."

Thanks for the replies guys - I hope it all works.

The difficulty with my 1979 A310 is that it was a DeLorean development car (DeLorean bought 6 A310's from Alpine) and the wiring has been, er, ...modified somewhat. Actually, the car has the fuel injected (presumably 2849cc Volvo) engine - never originally fitted to the A310 and so the wiring was cobbled to make it all work. It is still as it came from DeLorean in 1981. I want to leave it all as is, so I was disappointed that the original alternator couldn't be saved. Oh, well - that's life.

I'll let you know if it works, or whether a conflagration is the result...!!

Well, as I said above, the DeLorean used the 2-pin Renault type alternator anyway, so it would look "wrong" to a DeLorean person right now :D
