Top Gear Boys Weekend Challenge

Postby Tony Smith » Fri Dec 07, 2007 2:46 pm

Me and Phildini have been discussing having a Top Gear style boys adventure. Loose outline as follows - buy a car for £500 maximum off E-bay, any left over money can be spent on bolt on mods. A series of tests for the competitors - Steve's V-box can do top speed and acceleration times, a drive to the Nurbering for a timed lap . Overnight stay and drive back. Extra points for reliability and fuel economy. Sell car on e-bay - points for profit made. Small charge to enter, winner takes all prize pot. What do people think? - even if you wreck the car your still talking under a grand for a proper good laugh.
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

A few thoughts, could we make it renault, renault powered, or at a stretch French vehicles only. That way it would fit comfortably under the club umbrella and we are more likely to get a PFC magazine feature and they might even join in and run a car of their own.

As a warm up for a full blown Nurburgring trip we could always have a Bruntingthorpe version. Easier to do the Vmax etc there and I'm sure the journey and curcuit would still test the vehicles to destruction.

You could go for a lower £200 limit as a starter outing.

Take a look here for the beauties you could have bought:

Renault only

Postby Tony Smith » Mon Dec 10, 2007 4:05 pm

If we were to make it a club event then I could see we need to keep everything Renault but that will mean all the cars will be the same virtually and most will break before they get there! Realistically anybody who gets a cheap 21 or 5 turbo will win. Besides those 2 the only other performance cars that might stand a chance would be Clio and 19 16v's and maybe a v6 Laguna. It doesn't have to be a club event just a bit of fun.

Why don't you do it so that the rules are that you have to have to buy it from ebay (and show a legitimate auction) and not "given" a 21 or 5 turbo for peanuts....?

See I told you Clee more bang for less bucks they have not included GTA s on the band list

It also means I aint going

A. because I dont have the money to waste on a shed
B. I dont have the money to fly home.
C. If you actually make it to the Ring   will they let you on, I have just been made awear that all cars going on the Ring must now have all TUV approved parts mods and one of their super stringent Euro MOT's   I am not sure on details guys but check it all out.

Sound fun though maybe a capacity limit and non turbo cars so that then its more down to the driver not just the performance

More on that subject here: http://www.nurburgring.org.uk/tuv/index.html
never thought I would want a list but now find myself needing one just to remind me: Clio V6 230, 5 gt turbo, 5 Gordini turbo, Megane RS 300 Trophy.

Sounds safer to do something closer to home first.

Yes I think the rules would have to include showing the winning listing for proof of purchase cost.

If the rules are well written the turbo cars would not necessarily have an automatic advantage. For example points could be awarded on how close measured hp is to (or above) factory rather than just the highest.

The same with the performance figures.

Look at the top gear supercar challenge, some of those were only producing half the standard output.

I do think it should be all Renault though. To do it 'properly' would take quite a bit of effort and organisation and I don't think it would be worth it otherwise.

Realistically you might only get 5 or 6 entrants, and yes they would probably be 21T, 5T, Clio 16V, Laguna V6, Safrane V6, but still probably good fun.

Only problem is if they all break down at the start of the day and you have paid for a full days track use!

This would be a good event to combine with the 'Legends' test drive. At least then worst case scenario is only half a day wasted and a lot of fun in the afternoon.

There will have to be some sort of flexibility on price as this would have missed a £250 limit by £1

Steve, there's no engine in it!

Best buy for this sort of thing would be a 19 16v

Well the concensus seems to be to keep it Renault and if thats the case taking it to the ring will be tantamount to vehicular suicide! Shall we say Renault engined to open up the playing field a bit - would mean some Volvos and Peugeots would be eligible too.
I think £500 is a more realistic price point. Not too much sporty that goes is going to fall into the below £250 bracket. I agree must be bought on E-bay. We could call it the RAOC Renault Shed Ebay Challenge!
