Bad Alternator on the Turbo 2

Any ideas if the alternator on the T2 is anything special i noticed towards the end of the summer the instruments (theres a lot of em:eek were diming on idle and at revs, Just found out the alternators over charging near on 15v

So just wondering if the alternator can be repaired?

Just had a peek on the 3S development site 359 Euros 75A is that standard or uprated. http://www.renault5-turbo.com/catalogue.php

Any ideas on the above lads please (Seeing that im a member now :) at last :shock:

Was thinking that lee, But i had a word with a sparkie freind and he said it depends what Alternator it is? :roll: No doubht with it been a T2 it will be something odd :)

Ill try and have a look Tomoz if i get the chance.

If the 15v is at the alt end, I would not be too unhappy, normal charging is 14.5, how accurate is your meter.?The acid test is the voltage at the battery, it is likely to be less due to distance of batt to alt. First check is batt earth to chassis, gearbox earth strap, tightness of pos lead studs from batt to alt. However my guess is the battery. Charge it with mains charger, and check with hydrometer, before taking alt off for repair. Even if the alt is faulty its worth checking the wiring while you are about it. It is amazing how loose all the nuts on the studs loosen themselves over time.

If thats the case, as long as you are happy the battery is in good condition and topped up, it does appear the wiring is ok, otherwise voltage would be low at batt. One final check though, battery voltage with engin off, If this is above 12v, then I think the others are right, reg faulty.

if the regulator has packed up you can source them for around £15 and it would take 3 mins to fit it, if your alt is a valeo one it will be easy to repair

Managed to get the alternator off, what a t--t to get to, anyway its a valeo unit with a Motorola Regulator. Been on the phone and emailing with no luck :cry:

Another thing that im having doubts with is the output of the alternator. 50amp :? so im thinking with all the bits n bobs im running, Charge cooler additional fans, gauges etc if the standard alt will be up to the job :?:

The only 100% alternative at the mo is the 75A one from 3S developments. but at near on £300 :cry:

i doubt 50A is strong enough for or your bolt on bling Steve.....

what's the ref number of it and i'll look to see if a regualtor is available for it, even better there should be a number on the reg also....

Andy,
You'll probably have more luck than in the UK. My Audi alternator reg failed last year. In the UK Valeo only supply complete alternators, in France and Germany they sell brushes, bearings and regulator's as well.

Rip off Britain?- you bet

nope.... i bought parts from the uk and ...... prices were comparable with over here... you just need to know where to look...

Thanks for the help & advice lads, I ended up going for the expensive option from 3S :cry: hopfully the 75A alternator will power the bling stuff Andy :wink: Im sure with a bit more searching there would have been a much cheaper higher output option here in the UK with a bit of cross referencing, but its a race against time at the mo for some stuff thats in the pipeline 8)
