BP 102 - Anyone tried this?

Postby stephendell » Sun Jan 27, 2008 11:33 pm

Has anyone tried BP102?

They sell it just down the road from me on the A13. Supposed to be the ultimate track day fuel, F1 octane rating but still road legal. Currently £2.42 per litre.

No chance of any det with that I'd have thought.

Is Mr Biggs out there? Any thoughts or input?

Cheap performance upgrade or waste of money?

A friend of mine filled her car up with this by mistake, cost her over £100 for a Peugeot 206 1.9gti but she didn't notice much improvement in performance. It was at a garage near Silverstone and used by bikes for trackdays. Interesting to know how much benefit it would give to a tuned engine. Is it really that much better than a good super unleaded?

on a turbo engine = More boost or just an engine thats NOT blown up!

£2.42 per litre

What RON is genuine 4* ?as a garage near me sells it, think he charges around £1.50 per litre. I put £30 in my red turbo and thought I saw a difference but I'm not convinced :?

Hi Martin,
I read something in a classic car magazine about how leaded is made by adding lead to unleaded fuel.
As unleaded is minimum 95 ron anyway (I think) the resulting leaded fuel was said to be a lot higher rated (100 maybe) than old 4 star (98ron?).
So if you don't have a cat, and you have upped the boost, you should see an advantage.
The A610 ECU has knock sensors-I don't know about the GTA turbo- when you plug in a diagnostic box you get an ignition retardation figure on the readout (as well as boost)- I guess one way to tell would be to run the same car on different fuels and see if the ECU advances ignition (or ups the boost) until the car knocks and then backs off a little. You'd see this on the diagnostic display. This would mean you'd get more performance. (You won't hear the onset of knocking, but the sensors should).
If the car keeps the same settings regardless of the fuel, you have just wasted some money.
I tried this on the A610 whilst driving- but decided I needed a passenger to watch the gauges whilst I drove- I haven't tried the high octane fuel- when I tried 99 ron, I couldn't feel any difference- and the car handbook specifically says there is no advantage above 95 RON for a A610 (on a standard set up). I haven't done this again since I bought a diagnostic tool.
If you want to try this, I'll bring a diagnostic box with me when I come to collect the bits.

Cheers
Lee

Yep, if your car isnt knocking, then it won't make a blind bit of difference.

No gain

Postby Tony Smith » Thu Feb 07, 2008 3:29 pm

Higher fuel octane won't produce any extra power on a GTA but in theory it should allow you to advance the ignition timing or increase boost pressure to produce more power. I think some modern ecus will show improvements though as they adjust the ignition timing automatically

Yep I'm around (barely) but been a bit busy travelling too far every day round the M25, to amongst other places BP's head office in Sunbury!

To be honest I really only know about it from what I've read in magazines and on the BP press release and tech details on their intranet. Suffice it to say it's the real deal but at £2.40+ unless you have money to burn (literally) it's a bit steep.

I'd stick to Tesco Super which is 99octane (as it has 5% ethanol) but as everyone has said it'd make little odds on a GTA or 610 anyway unless you'd ramped the boost right up. The ECU isn't properly adaptive like a BMW where they can run very close to knocking and they don't rev that high either.

With the Tesco and BP fuel you also have to consider fuel density and calorific value as the BP stuff is certainly not only meant to have very high octane but also release more energy (bigger bang in other words)

The interesting thing is that Evo tested normal and super high octane fuels a while back and concluded the biggest point to consider was how long they'd been kept in the tank. The fuels decay over time and volatile components evaporate and break down etc so they found that the best gains were to be had by buying from a store where they have a quick turnaround. (Funny thing is the Tesco stores usually do because the 99octance stuff didn't used to be that much more than 95,though it's gone up a bit since then)

It's just a shame BP don't hand out free samples if you're doing work for them.....
I'm just here for the gasoline.
