Coolant Leak

Yes fix one leak and another appears!!

Just checking the coolant levels after doing the water pump and it's still dropping :roll: After further investigation I found some coolant under the turbo (in the tray directly under the Actuator).

Turned the car over and I can see the leak, it's dripping from the very back of the turbo towards the wastegate. Is there a gasget there between the turbo and wastegate, or another pipe. I can't really see because the heatshield is in the way.

Anyone had this before?

Condensation ? Did you run the car ? You'd be suprised how much it generates .Just two pipes ,one in ,one out into the turbo body .You should be able to see these to check .
Still losing water .I have a spare set of head gaskets if you need them :wink: :lol:

Condensation? No it's definately leaking I can see it, maybe a crack in the back of the turbo then?

Be :shock: if it's cracked .But nowt else in that area .Just two little pipes under the turbo going into the heads .I also have two spare turbos :lol: One without water with a 360 degree thrust bearing .

Right, took the heatshield partly off so I could see more today (another typical Alpine job, 2 nuts seized :roll: )

From this pic I hope you can see the water pool underneath the turbo, it looks to be running down from between the turbo and wastgate, thought this was only a vacuum with exhaust gasses or does water run around here as well :?: :?

Just to clarify mine has 2 water pipes going into the turbo and 2 oil pipes going into it. Obviously the leak/drip is nowhere near here, where are the other 2 pipes that go into the heads situated?

The drip seems to stop when the car is warmed up, maybe expanding metal stops it or it just evaporates stright away I don't know, anyone?

dip your finger into the water and taste it on the end of your tounge, DONT swallow!

if it tastes sweet then its engine coolant, if its just plain then condensation coming through the turbo wastegate flange.

Leak on turbo

Water condensation for sure.
Having rebuilt one of my turbo's.
I started the engine and could see water dripping out of the same area you have highlighted.
Made me, go "oh shit".; I like you dismantled the whole heat shield only to be advised afterwards from DG.

But they all do.

I thought someone else must have seen/had this problem before. SS74 I will do the "taste test" next to confirm. In the meantime can someone tell me why condensation causes this as I can't get my head around it!!!

Condensation

Look at your house windows in the morning.
Hot and cold.
Hot inside cold outside.
Basicaly when the water vapor in the air, converts back to water.
However i am sure somebody will look up the wikipedia definition. And probable come up with something technical like the due point.

All exhausts have condensation. You always see water coming out of exhaust on any cars on warm up, its all part of the same system.

Complete combustion of petrol (well at least of the octane thats in petrol) results in Carbon Dioxide and Water. Its just the warm water vapour in the exhaust gas condensing on the turbo housing which, at that point, is a big cold lump of metal.

Update - Your all correct!! Last time I drove the car in the warmer weather I did not notice any water collecting under the turbo, must have been condensation. My level in the expansion bottle seems to have settled down and has not dropped since.
