ABS

I would like to add a switch to the ABS system on my car so that i can turn it on/off whilst driving. Is there a convenient place for me to do this?

its pretty easy and you have a number of choices.
1) break into the feed on the abs control relay- that will result in a self test each time that you turn it back on. This is accessible where the abs loom joins the main one.

2) Alternatively you could override the yaw sensor so that the car thinks its permanently cornering hard- accessible at the same connector.

In both cases a loop to one of the spare switched should do it.

But now the main point, I'm with Clee, don't do it.

The GTA has a weight distribution that means the front wheels will lock early- depriving you of steerage and resulting in ploughing straight on. I find it difficult (except in snow) to think of a scenario where turning the ABS off will make things better. Early Quattro's allowed you to do it because of snow.

I have a mate who thought he could do better than his M3's traction control system. Played with it, left it off accidentally, put it in a ditch (rather than the 911 coming the other way).
He had it repaired (only 4k) but has sold it on as he doesn't trust himself any more.

Sorry for the cautionary tales, but.....there are few enough GTA's left in the UK, and we'd also be sorry to see you hurt. :wink:

You need to drive a GTA sans ABS Jon .They are terrible under heavy braking ,even worse at lower speeds :shock: Your asp will soon be round the front :lol:

My GTA doesn't have ABS, and I found that the braking bias to the front was way too great, so I have done what I have done to all my rear engined Renaults and removed the brake pressure limiter for the rear brakes, and fitting a T piece instead.

This has certainly improved the braking performance, and in extreme braking still locks up the front first, in the dry or wet. I have the EBC reds on the front, and greens on the rear, and was also fine with greens all around. I now have 17" Azevs on the GTA, but it was OK on the standard wheels.

Not that you have many dirt roads in th UK, but I have found in the past that I would only like to turn off the ABS on th dirt, as it actually makes the braking distance much longer than without.

were on the GTA turbo is the "brake pressure limiter for the rear brakes", I fancy trying this.

Bolted to the tunnel ,next to the gearbox ,near side .I might do same ,though be worth testing that the limiter is actually working at the correct pressure first .According to the book there's not much in it between front and rear . 42 bar front ...........36-39 rear .
