Also when first starting up the computer always shows 8888 then you press the button and the correct fuel amount is displayed and remains correct.

Second bit first, Does this only happen when you disconnect the battery? or each time you switch on the ign?
First bit. It sounds to me that that you have intermittent connectors on the back of the instrument panel, and or intermittent connectors to the dash switches. You will have to remove the instrument panel and clean all the connectors with Electrolube or similar, plugging and unplugging each connector in turn, a few times, to clean off the surface corrosion on the contacts. Once you do that and the dash switch works consistently, switch to MPG, go for a run and let us know what the reading is (if there is one
