Well after a few months of doing nothing, followed by a quote from Renault of £87 plus vat, for a new key I have finally replaced my lost key with John C's help.
Renault wanted two weeks (after an initial in person visit- photo ID, car reg and a utility bill before they can order) to provide me with a key- "provided Alpine let Renault know the code"...
So I decided to have another go. Three ebay keys (about £2.00 each) later I got one that was the system John described in earlier posts. Every key I have is different- and only 1 was reprogrammable.
Most are electrically programmed (including the 610 original) and I doubt it will be possible to reset them, even though theoretically they should be reprogrammable too. These have "Renault" written on the back and a philpps screw holding them together.
The one that was reprogrammable was an earlier design -1991 or so, with the Renault logo (not name) on the back and a conventional screw.
This was adjustable (with a soldering iron and magnifier) to match my receiver- and it all works! Amazing, but it took 2 goes to get it right.
So if you lose a key (or want a spare) it can be done- just ask John for help (or me as a distant second best).
If you don't fancy the reprogramming, "just" get a clio/laguna/safrane/espace? set of key fobs and the receiver and it should all swap over. The key blades unscrew so you can keep the locks and change the plipper independently.
Good luck (and many thanks to John)
