trimming the front wings

after lowering the black car, the wheels are catching on the inner lip of the front wings. do you just take the grinder to it? does the paint bubble up with the heat?

Its plastic. Either drive the car and let it rub its self away (!) or carefully take a knife to it, I think a grinder might be asking for trouble!

letting the tyres do the hard work makes them look very second hand after a while :roll:

maybe i'll try the knife, or a file.

What size wheels and tyres have you got on the front then.
By the way does any body know what the correct full diameter of the back wheel/tyre combo should be. I've got TSW 17" with 245/35's. The seem a little small in diameter.

16" on the front with 205/45 i think, and 17" on the rear with 265/40 or 45.

Omar, you rears should be at least a 245-40-17, not 35 profile..that is way out.

On the correct width rear rim, the rears should be 255 or 265-40-17 as Richard said...

That obviously means the gearing is out. Do you think its much, so what ever my speedo's reading i'm actually going a little slower then. The gearing ratio at 4000 RPM means the speedo should read 104mph approx, if in 5th its 1000rpm to about 26mph? because my speedo generally reads about 90mph at 4000 revs in top.

If you run 255s the speed should be around 110, with the 245s around 104...but you wont notice any difference on the speedo with different tyres.

Your car may be one of the rare turbo models that was fitted with the atmo gearbox from the factory with shorter 4th and 5th ratios, or the car has had a box change in its life...

Can you tell, that is if i crawled underneath it and check the ID plate on it? or do the plates on the engine bay identify any thing. Or could the speedo be out. So far its a very reliable speedo i.e no wobbles or wild swings etc.

Thanks for that, that means my rear wheels are running 4" short per revolution thats quite alot, no wonder its reving higher at slower speeds.!

Whatever size tyres you run, 4000rpm should always read 104mph in top..

The engine code for the shorter box on the turbos is D501 121 or 123, if the car is up to 1987

The gearbox code to be sure though is UN1 05, on the box id plate.

think about it this way, jack up the rear of you car and drive your way through the gears with your wheels on or off and it won't make a blind bit of difference to you speed/ rpm. :wink:

Gents, don't try this at home, A car doing a ton, with or without wheel, is not what you want on your front drive as it wobbles off the jack !!! Hell, that would be a learning experience never to be repaeted.

Original wheel and tyre sizes.

8.5 x 15 inch Tyres 255 x 45 x 15 = a diameter of 611 mm

New wheels and tyres of 17" diameter.

245 x 35 x 17= a diameter of 603 mm

255 x 40 x 17= a diameter of 628 mm

265 x 40 x 17= a diameter of 644 mm

My own car is running on Toyo Proxy sizes

Front 7.5 x 16 rim 215 x 40 x 16

Rear 10 x 17 rim 265 x 40 x 17


Ramo, check your rear rims as you may find you are running on 7.5 x 17.
