Cheers Jay :D
I've got Dave's old lump on the stand .Pulley came off easily :D
Dave left a set of valve spring compressors here when we did his swap ,they are designed to work without removing the heads so I'll have a look and see if they'll workon the Z7U .I need to get a device to pump up the pots to stop the valves dropping though I think ......

Anyone done the springs/stem guides without removing the heads ??????

Lee, just thinking out of the box........ get an old spark plug, remove the core and inards and then areldite a schrader valve into it. This will allow you to use a cycle pump to get some air pressure into the pot and hold the valves shut. Obviously you will be reliant on good rings and also dont knock the valve stem or the pressure will be instantly lost. OR you could do 1 pot at a time, while the piston is at TDC, but you'll have to time it all up again if you have removed the chains.

Lee, There was a tool to hold the valves up when changing a broken valve spring, and it worked as shown in my very poor diagram. I seem to remember that you are quite good at making up things (no pun intended  )
It should be possible to make it up along the lines of the diag.

Just a thought.......
How about removing the plug and pumping in LM grease when both valves are closed. I'd have thought that there should be sufficient resistance from the grease to prevent a valve dropping. I'm sure I've read of using grease in the pot whilst drilling and tapping helicoils with the head in situ. An alternative might be to insert a condom through the plug hole and then inflate it (just the job for a fecked engine ;-) ).

I'd have to use 6 condoms and that'd be a years worth so I've got one of these instead .

Don't think I'll bother now as I can clearly hear it blowing past the piston rings
The rocker assembly will come out fairly easily though .On one side you have to remove the circlip to slide the bar out the back as it won't pass through the cam sprocket .
I'll speak to Dave and find out just how smokey it was and when it did it .This engine is only temporary in any case ........................

Here is an easier one for you. Start with piston BDC coming up to Compression TDC. Get a large ball of string or cord, about 2-3mm in diameter, and feed it down the plug hole until not much more can be got in. Keep hold of the end, and then turn crank towards TDC. The string will be forced up to hold the valves in place. Once you have attended to guides and springs, release pressure from piston, and withdraw string. No mess, Low cost, and you still have your 6 condoms   Lucky you ( what a shame, no smiley for "envious")

Spoken to Dave and he said he only really noticed it smoking in traffic .I'm going to just plonk it in from the top and hope .
Fed up with it being off the road and I'm still sorting the Adaptronic so if that development blows it up I'm not going to be that bothered
Target is to thrash it at the RTOC National day at Mallory end of September ..........Small matter of a MOT before then though
