GTA Indicator malfunction

Postby JohnE » Tue Aug 19, 2008 6:48 am

Hi all,

I have an interesting problem with my right hand drive1989 GTA. The left indicator works perfectly, but the right indicator will flash up to 5 times and then stay on. Most times it will only flash once or twice before staying on permanently.

Any thoughts??

first....... check all your earths, or even add a temp earth direct onto the flasher relay just to be sure.

Gi-day Sport

I would suspect the Flasher unit itself. The position of which is shown in the diag below. Although the diag is for the turbo, the position of the flasher unit is the same in both cars. Unfortunately it is not easy to chech the unit without substituting it with another one. I do have to dissagree with Simon with regard to the earth, as there is only one earth going to the unit, and if one side works, then I would assume the earth is good. Sorry Simon.

To be sure that you have the right unit, unplug the one shown, and check the flasher again, clearly if you have the right unit, both flashers will be inoperative.
Hope this helps.

John

Looking at the diag of the unit, it would be interesting to know, before you pull it apart, if the fault still exists,ie:- LH ok, RH faulty, when you switch on the hazzard lights. If it is still faulty, then I am 99.9% sure the flasher unit is your problem. (note the 0.1% caution, you can never be 100% sure, until the fault is cured, I learnt that many years ago   )

GTA Flasher problem

Postby JohnE » Mon Sep 22, 2008 5:53 am

John,

Thanks for your input. The hazard flashers work perfectly on both sides. I assume this is because it is an earth problem and using all lights somehow allows an earth to be established for the right hand side.

I will report when the problem is solved.

regards

Hi John/Phil

Firstly with all the info now, I am pretty convinced that the actual flasher unit its self must be faulty. All the earths will be OK, as they are common to each side indicators and the hazzard lights, and all the lights work under Hazzard switched conditions, and the switch is OK, as, when operated, at least it starts to flash, it would not do that if the switch was faulty. At this stage substitution with a new or known working one, is what I would do next

GTA Indicator malfunction

Postby JohnE » Mon Sep 29, 2008 1:55 am

Hi everyone,

The problem has been cured by resoldering ALL the connections associated with the flasher unit and associated wiring.

On replacing the dash, the fuel guage and trip computer display is now not working. Oh well, out with the soldering iron again.

THANKS EVERYONE for your input!!
