PHILDINI A610 PROJECT PAINTWORK & REBUILD UPDATE

Postby phildini » Fri Sep 05, 2008 8:18 pm

Thought some of you guys might find this interesting. Every person in this site will be the proud owner of a plastic fantastic. The problem is a lot of them do need a repaint and local body shops don't always seem to be very keen in doing it especially if the car has been painted before ( and most of them will have ) This is because of the amount of work required to prepare the body. My A610 was especially bad, the previous owner had somebody to paint it with a flip effect in mind, but it all went wrong and he decided to re prime it with a really thick build primer which then reacted with the paint, basically it was a disaster!!! The guys at my body shop were not keen in rubbing the thing down and when I looked further into it I knew there was more than just a few coats of paint. At the same time it worried me because I was not sure what was hiding under all that paint, so I was all set and ready to sand the car down myself, until Mr Dell approached me with a very interesting article SODA BLASTING.

I decided to get it done, even though it was not cheap, I thought it was worth the cost. Below you can see a few pictures from the beginning to the end. MY ADVISE IS TO TAKE THE CAR TO THEM ALL STRIPPED OUT AND LEAVE IT THERE, IF THE PROCESS IS RUSHED IT WILL TAKE TOO MUCH OFF. THIS STUFF GETS EVERYWHERE AND IT'S A NIGHTMARE TO GET OFF. BE WARNED!!

Looks like a great job- and lots of time saved vs doing it manually- anyone know why the panels are different colours afterwards?

Yep the wings are plastic, the nose cose and rear wings are glass fibre, but injected, the bonnet and doors are semi laid up glass.

More update on my A610 It has been a long process and lots of hard work. My bodyshop at work has been fantastic, basically we have started from the begining, luckly for me they have an empty storage area where all the rubbing and dusting can take place......... also the colour I have selected don't help the cause as it needs extra work to get it 100%...... The saga continues...........

Looks to me that your body shop has been playing footie with your car.
