Postby David Gentleman » Mon Oct 06, 2008 7:50 pm

Looks like a pretty tidy installation. 8)

Pity about the way it sounds though. :( It's no V6 is it! :D

I saw the article with all the 21's at a rolling road and high 200's was commonplace so surely 350 is possible. What did the Renault racers run I wonder.
Tho' the guy who had put a V6 in his 21 might have something to add!

If you look at the torque readings on those 21 RR figures, youll find the highest power car made peak torque well high up around 4500+, and this is the only reason why it made better power.

You could get more power out of a 1.4 R5 lump! Theyve hit the 300bhp mark now at around 25psi. A friend of mine is running 230bhp, with the engine relocated to the back of the car (its not a Turbo2) and recently done a 3.98 to 60!, and the fastest standing quarter is 12.1 seconds!. Only problem is, we have another 400Kgs to work with.

Ah, but I did this to replace a V6 Atmo, not converting under the guise of having a powerful GTA  The engine fitted in my car was last dyno'd at 235bhp and 260lb/ft, so it will be nice and nippy and less laggy.

The basic 21 turbo came with 175BHP and 199 lb's of torque.

The Europa Cup cars ran 300BHP

The Super Production cars ran approx 440 BHP

The Super Prod cars where very highly stressed and tbh I can imagine that there were very many standard parts in the engine at all, when I say that I refer to modified standard equipment; I would imagine things like rods cranks pistons cams etc etc were all custom items.

I would also expect the engines to get a rebuild every time they raced, I would not expect them to produce 440 bhp and get driven as a daily driver.

The 21 turbo is now being tuned and pushed further than before with help from Jo in Belgium he is helping people build Cup spec engines with engines now producing over 300bhp. Engine mods would include liners pistons cup spec cams more modern turbo 3" exhaust manifold, some cars with cup inletmanifold/ plenham, 3 bar map sensor either running standalone or modified standard ECU's and of course up rated fuel delivery. The Boost pressure will be turned right up to make these power figures I beleive the Europa cup cars ran between 2.5 - 3 bar I could be wrong in order to make those kind of figures.

My car runs an single box exhaust filter and bleed valve and on a provingday was estimated @ 1.25 Bar to push out 212 bhp a little more than a standard V6 Turbo so with the weight advantage over the V6 PRV handling and acceleration in a GTA should be fantastic

This is a conversion I considered very seriously myself and would still consider with the right rolling shell especially as the lack in weight at the rear would make for a very entertaining car 8)

Good luck Mr G be interesting to see the reasults on the road

Craig Rightons 21 turbo car with approximately 250bhp stripped out interior was running a 13.2 quarter what does an A610 do a qtr in?

si21 PS Renault built 6 of them ......if it was no good why would they have bothered?

Craig's car

Postby Tony Smith » Wed Oct 22, 2008 3:08 pm

Wasn't Craig's car blowing up virtually everytime he did a 1/4 mile in it? It was certainly hugely unreliable.

He split a couple of liners a couple of times but that was down to a fueling probems, in fairness he did all the work himself including headwork and at that time the car had never been on the rolling road. shortly afterwards he sorted the fueling advance problem by fitting standalone and produced 250 BHP with a standard cam

The car has since then undergone a major engine rebuild with cup spec build including machined liners and a cup cam and should be good for in excess of 300bhp .....reliable.

Sorry Tony I dont agree I am not saying that the sound of the 21 compares to the V6 PRV but then a V6 pPorshe lump dont sound like a PRV. sorry but even a cossie lump sopunds like a Pinto sorry but the escorts dont sound as nice IMO and thats my opinion and quite frankly a Pinto sounds better than either of the two Girl bands whose name I cant even remember LOL
