Questions

Postby jon_viola » Wed Aug 27, 2008 10:20 am

Hi,
I've got my MOT coming up and have no reversing lights, is this a fail?

Also whilst setting up my new dash pack i'd like to add manual control to the engine bay fans but at the same time leave them with auto overide as normal for when i forget and also when ive got out of the car, is this possible? Would i have to make up some kind of circuitry?

Cheers

Hi Jon

I do not know about the MOT, as we dont have it over here, but it is a very simple cct. Having assumed you have checked the bulbs and fuse  Find 155 on the diag below, and with the ign on, short out the two connections. If the lights now come on, then you have a faulty reverse lights switch. If it still does not work, Come back to us.
Image

With regard to the manual operation of the engin compartment fans, I have done this mod by using a spare switch (second from the left, of the left hand bank of 4, on the dash, note Atmo) You will have to use a relay in the engin compartment as the dash switch will not carry the current of the fans and will burn out if used. I used a Lucas fused relay SRB522. and you will have to run a wire from the switch to the relay. By using this switch, the relay will drop out, if inadvertently you leave the switch depressed when you turn off the ign. All the auto temp sensor switch does is put an earth on to the fan motors to make them operate. This mod will not affect the normal operation of the fans. In my installation, I have two relays operating the engin bay fan, and the rad fan, both operating together with the same switch, for hot summer (when we had them) mountain assents. You will have to be able to find the voltage for the relay on the connector to the switches, preferably with a meter .
If you want more detailed info for the installation, just say.

the reverse lights are not part of the mot but probable cause of failure would be the reverse switch on the side of the gearbox

...what he said... can be a bit of a bigger to replace due to access on the GTA. Order with the alpine part # and not the renault one, it's cheaper.

Reverse lights are not tested at MOT.

Thanks for this, i'll not worry about the lights for now and try to get some sort of fan system in place in time for Croix.

Hi Jon

Further to our discussions with PM`s, and our agreement to continue on this thread, I have modified my thoughts re the rear Air Blower Fan and the Air Extraction Fan. Whilst looking something up, I came across the cct for these fans, and due to the fact that the two fans come on together, the relay I suggested before will most probably not be able to carry the current for them both. so I suggest that you use a Lucas SRB520, it is a 30amp relay, but unfused, however the fans cct has its own failsafe devices, so there is no problem. The cct below will give you a good idea how to connect the relay up.
Image
The easiest place to connect pin30 is at the live side of sensor 574, (it should have 12volts on it at all times when the fans are not running, remember though, having identified the live wire, dissconnect the battery before connecting the wire from pin 30 to it) located on a support lug infront of the turbo as stated above, but keep the relay and wire away from the heat of the turbo.
The Lucas SRB522 fused relay is still ok for the rad fans, connected as already discussed,
The wire from the switch to each relay at 86, and 85 to earth, need not be as heavy as wire from pin30 to the switch 574. but the wire from pin 87 to earth needs to be heavy, the same as pin 30 to 574. ie:- not less than 15amp, prefreably around 20amp.
Have you decided how you are going to do the switching at the dash yet?
Hope this info helps you.

Did the rear bay fan today, great mod. Definitely noticed a difference. Couldn't find a way through the bulkhead for the front one though...

Also i found my rad bleed valve for the first time, all it seemed to do was let out clear water, is this a good sign? Noticed that my rad only has one fan and have seen a pair for sale is it an easy job for a mechanical numbskull like me to install the upgrade?

Hi Jon

As long as it is water, its a good sign.
With regard to the fans, my manual shows two fans for the Turbo ( one for the Atmo ) Fitting a second one should not cause you any problems. They usually come with a "X" style stiff wire bracket, and if the rad is original, the attachment holes should not be difficult to find. Four nuts and bolts of the hole size is all that is required. I would just touch the threads with a bit of nail varnish, any colour will do, see whats available on the spouces dressing table , before doing them up, it will prevent the shaking loose, works every time  Wire the extra one across the original, on the other hand you might find there is a spare connector for the second fan which you can use. I ca`nt remember if the fans are on the upper side, or lower side. If its the upper side, you may have to remove the rad to install, or just release it to hang on the hoses while you attach the extra fan.

Hi John,

Fraid not!! Bought a new rad fan to make it a pair but it turned up senza mount so it's just gone back. However as soon as i have two in i'll do it asap as it seems to be a top mod and even for a mechanical simpleton like, possible!!

I'll keep you informed

Cheers

Jon

PS anyone got a cheap extra fan PLUS mounting or even a pair?
