Big Injectors = Lumpy Idling?

Postby jon_viola » Sun Nov 30, 2008 5:57 pm

Hi,

My car has Cosworth blue injectors and when on the road sounds and goes brilliantly, however no matter how much i play with the throttle pot i can not get it to idle properly, it seems to hunt to about 2-2.5k revs then drop to almost nothing then recover to normal or stall. The car seems to run at it's best (on the M4 test way anyway  ) with the TP turned fully to the left but idles at it's best with it turned almost fully to the right, but you can smell the richness!!

Please help!!!!!

Confused as usual

Sounds like it over fueling .The std Ren pot is a bit basic .Have you altered the fueling in the ecu .How are the big injectors controlled ?
You need to speak to Mr FAULKS I think ......

 check your Idle valve .......

It would seem to hunt to about 2-2.5k revs then drop to almost nothing then recover to normal or stall.

Take it off and shake/twist it side to side .You should feel the valve moving .Spray through it with some carb/brake cleaner .
If you can ,power it up .Put the positive to the middle pin then the neg to one of the other two pins .It should move ,put the earth on the other pin and it should move again and so on etc .

The original 2.5 pot is just a pair of limit switches.

Yes, all turning the pot does is tune the fully shut switch .You can feel it click when it's in contact .

Have fitted your IAV Lee, much better for a while then cuts out, then the same- runs great then cuts out again.

Peeled of the rubber boot and checked the connections only to find that all three wires were bare at the plug- cracked insulation!!!! Have applied electrical tape for the moment to see if it makes a difference but still to no avail.

Have had it on a gas tester and re set the CO to 1% (ish 1.24-1.40 seemed to work best) but will obviously have to rewire the IAV as there must be more shorts further down the wire. Can anyone tell me where to get that plug from and how to wire it up?

There's another link but I can't find it at the minute ..............I reckon it may just be that your injectors are TOOOOO big .How is the ECU setup ???

How do you mean? It has the BBR chip in at the moment if that helps and a cap on the air temp sensor to take account of the charge cooler. You'll have to ask Martin Faulks really as he very kindly help me out. The only thing i can think of is it needed an extra earth to the injector relay to get it gong with these injectors being a slightly different impedence, but if it was a problem it wouldn't rev at all surely?

It idles really beautifully, quiet and even, when still and you can rev it on the spot all you like and it will come back to idle no problem- i did this for 1/2hour or so without stalling. Then you drive 2-300 yds and it goes all funny again, or not sometimes its absolutely fine!! When it is driving it seems to be great....
