Engine Bay / Perc Fan - Atmo

Postby Dave Williams » Fri Jan 16, 2009 6:55 pm

Anyone have an engine bay / perc fan foran Atmo - same as a 5 turbo I think ?

Mine sounds like bricks in a cement mixer.

No surprise that renault want far too much for a new one

from a previous thread I think Mr Dell mentioned that you could use the cheaper fan from a Turbo and reuse the Atmo mount. Is this right El Presidente ? and are the turbo fans still cheaper ?

(or does anyone have a spare fan from a Turbo ?)

thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

I have been waiting to see if you were going to get an answer before I put in my tu`pence worth,
I take it you mean the air extractor fan which comes on when the engin bay gets hot? if so, have you had it out for a check before wanting to get a new one?
The reason I ask is because it is only a motor with a fan of sorts attached to it, which should not be too much trouble to overhaul. But with the sound you describe...... is it possible that there is some grit being hammered around in the fan housing, or is it dry bearings. ball or bush? Even if the brushes are worn out, it should not a big problem to replace them. That is assuming it is not a cheap sealed unit which cannot be taken appart , which I doubt......The fact that it turns, though noisey, leads me to feel that the windings are all ok.

Cheers

Hi John- yeah it is the fan in the engine bay that blows air to the coil and carbs.

took it out today - there is play in the rotor shaft...I imagine causing the fan to grate.

it had AEG on the outside - may take it to my washing machine bloke :)

not had time to investigate further...not sure if the bearing can be fixed - though at £180 for a replacement worth a shot.

Yes Dave, sounds like the bearings to me, as it is an AEG Motor, I am sure that it can be repaired :D .... Let us know how you get on, and if it has bearings or bushes for future reference...Thanks

If its the same motor as a R5 GT turbo, Euro car parts list a replacement at 61.50. No stock just now though.

Does anyone know if this is the same motor as the Turbo cooling fan on the 610/Turbo? One of mt fans is noisy, so it would be nice to quieten it down and I'd go for 60 quid, but not 180.
