What side to fill up at the pumps ?

Postby simontaylor » Wed Feb 04, 2009 12:40 pm

I would think I should have noticed the little secret on my dashboard that was staring me in the face the whole time...I didn't...and I bet you didn't either...

Have you ever rented or borrowed a car and when arriving at the petrol
station wondered...mmm, which side is the petrol cap?
My normal solution was to stick my head out the window, strain my neck
and look, try to see in the side mirrors or even get out of the car!
Well ladies and gentlemen, I'm going to share with you my little secret
so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the petrol station or put your neck at risk of discomfort or injury.

If you look at your petrol gauge, you will see a small icon of a petrol
pump?
The handle of the petrol pump will extend out on either the left or right
side of the petrol pump?
If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left! If your tank
is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo). It is that
simple!

Don't feel dumb, just go out and share the world's best kept auto secret
with your friends.

TRUE or FALSE ???

False, isn't it?

I've just looked at picture of my GTA dashboard taken just after a battery re-connection so all the computer display is all '18 8888' but the petrol pump symbols both have the handle on the right. The petrol filler is, of course, in reality on the left.

Or is it just that, as always, the Alpine is different?

Or you could just pull the hose over the car  They are designed long enough to reach the opposite side ................they also have little rubber rings on the hose to stop it dragging on yer lovely paintwork....

50% false.....Works for the 21 but not for the GTA

False in the Diahatsu`s case, but correct for the Jaguar, with the addition of a small triangular arrow alongside the pump hose icon pointing to the side for the filler. Interesting though .......trouble is I`m going to have to check each car I come across now..........Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!

I will stick to 'pulling the filler release remote lever & looking in the wing mirrors to see which side the filler flap has popped open' technique . Never fails !

Does not help trying to locate which side when you are in the car, but......

on cars with only one tail pipe the filler is generally on the other side!
