Could be an interesting project if someone wants to finish it.

There were a handful of factory cars but they had a Le Mans bodykit too.

My favourite looking GTA ever I think! 8) 8) Saw this car in the flesh back in 2004 (Zolder), caught the bug that weekend...........

Having said that :wink: Jo from Belgium has produced a Cup spec engine producing 324bhp from memory and 285@the wheels all re-mapped on the standard ECU :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:

The engine being 82 Kilo's lighter than the PRV ; balanced handling and very good power to weight ratio means it would be an awsum car!

Has got me thinking though I have 2 J7R's one with a flowed head throw it a reasonable lumpy stick 3 bar map sensor bigger injectors uprated fuel pump and regulator; remap standard ECU. Will need a better turbo though close to 300 bhp and no weight and a quick torquey car to run up em hills :?: all for a couple of bags of sand.

si21 and a lot of effort and work .......you never get sumink for nufink


















PS Renault did fit the 21lump in a GTA an Alpine ....if its good enough for a Delorean or a Venturi its good it enough for me :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: it's just the other way around :wink:

Its a tempting idea- remove the worst (IMHO) bit of an alpine (the PRV) and fit something smaller and lighter with similar power. A supercharged Honda VTEC sounds a nice idea....
A couple of things that could be a challenge depending on your definition of complete.
1) Rev counter- this will show 2/3 of reality unless there is a 4cyl version available OR someone smarter than me can do a 6/4 converter (should be simple enough....?)
2) Spring rates/ride height. It should (ideally) have some softer rear springs and lower rear tyre pressures to compensate for the weight reduction (or adjustable struts maybe) , but that would affect the handling. From memory softer rear springs creates more under steer, as do lower rear tyre pressures. That could be desirable depending on tastes.
3) Cooling- are the anti perc fans set up yet?
4) I notice the charge cooler isn't here yet, so no boost and a few more pennies needed (plus the headlamp glasses....).

If only I had somewhere to put it and no other projects just now. I'd be tempted.

Shame David's giving up on alps, it would have been nice to see it finished.

I wouldn't worry about the Honda engine to be honest the J7R has a longish stroke and makes it very torquey in standard guise it puts out 175bhp and 199lb's of torque ok so the honda revs but it will never match or even come near matching the midrange torque of the turbo'd J7R. Put it this way no Honda Civic type R is quicker than my 21 that I have found :wink: plus the extra cams head valve gear all weigh more with the Honda lump; I bet my bottom dollar it weighs more than Renaults all alley 8 valve. Then you have to mate it to the UN1 at least the you have a bell housing that will bolt up with some clearance mods made. J7R can also be reliably tuned to over 200bhp and 230lbs of torque. Mine runs 212 with an exhaust, filter, bleed valve and modded ecu that maxes out the standard injector pulse. about £300 on a 21.

I have no idea on the general scheme of things, but there was a craze in the 80's of lowering DeLoreans by putting front springs on the rear - these were softer and cause them to be properly tail happy (not that the americans noticed, not enough corners)

Engine transplants

When I was looking to build a track GTA I looked into lots of options to replace the PRV and nothing was very straightforward. Best options are anything that originally ran with a PRV transaxle which only the 21 turbo can offer anything approaching similar power levels or an engine for a kit car using the same transaxle in one of the midengined kit cars like the GT40 replicas. I came to the conclusion after much investigation that the best engines to use were V8 small block chevy (lightest,smallest and cheapest way to get 400 bhp!), Lexus V8 , modern, indestructible cheap and plentiful, V6's - Audi 2.7 twin turbo - very tuneable but expensive and hard to source, 4 cylinders - Toyota's 2 litre turbo from the MR2/GT4. I don't see the point in putting a 21 turbo lump in - ok it's a bit lighter and you get a little more torque but personally I'd rather have a PRV, at least it's a six, its much smoother you have to throw the same money at it to get it tuned to the same power as a GTA to get much over 230bhp with either your going to have to change mechanical parts like cams so I just don't see the point. If you want up to 350 bhp I'd stick with the PRV as you'll make this with a twin turbo 3 litre and if you want more than this I suggest (a) Use one of the understressed V8's and (b) see a doctor because your probably mad (c) make sure you have plenty of life insurance!
