Nissan 350Z engine

Postby 2P5T » Tue Apr 14, 2009 8:21 am

Is this 3.5 V6 a relative of Renault's 3 litre 24 valve and if so I wonder has anyone transplanted on into an Alpine?

Both would require a custom belhousing and engine mounts and are very different to the 24V PRV.

Renault never fitted the 24V PRV to any of it's cars and this is the only one that can fit the Alpines easily, hence the demand for the very rare Citroen XM 24V and Peugeot 605 SVE 24V engines.

Thanks Stephen. :D

I'd assumed that the Clio V6 and 3.0 Safranes and Lagunas (Phase 1) had the same engine as the XM and 605.

Gawd, that's muddying the waters. Anything French pre 97 had a PRV, most post 97 had the PSA V6 still used today. The XM had both because it spanned the two eras, as did the 605 and Laguna. The Clio V6 has always had the PSA engine, as has the Xantia & 406.

The Vel Satis / 350Z engine, ubiquitous in the US in the Maxima truck, is a completely different engine. My friend Marc Levy in the US has fitted one to his DeLorean but did it by mating it to a 911 transmission because an off-the-shelf bellhousing was available.

Thanks Martin, that's interesting.

Clearly I've been away from French cars too long and have some catching up to do.

I didn't know there even was a 3 litre Xantia (sounds an unlikely creation!) and as I know only the 406 Coupe and not the saloon got a 3.0 V6.

the 406 IS a Xantia with all the interesting stuff removed. The Xantia V6 was only ever an auto in RHD (BOOO!). Some people are now putting V6's into Activas for some serious fun, but AFAIK nobody ahs started with a 255 Clio lump *strokes chin*

(still love my daily Xantia - 210,000 and counting)

Main difference is the PRV is 90 degree, the PSA is 60 degree.

technically speaking, the PRV is single overhead cam - ie SOHC. The PSA engine is twin cam, or DOHC

The 24v PRV really confuses things...

just being pedantic...

really intersting (apart from expensive) good drive shafts and presumably the 911 transmission is more than up for the job.

I know one of the 21 lads was thinking of using a 911 Porshe box, I guess its down to availability and cost, dare I ask the cost of a box, anyone know?

So in fact ......

............will be a lot heavier and weight distribution would sit higher at the back end and is only marginally more powerful. Would there really be any improvement or benefit over a tweaked 2.5 turbo lump.

Are there been any really powerful PSA lumps out there, as in my opinion the engine for the spec its got doesn't really perform. I always thought a lump like that shpuld have been producing at very least approching 300bhp from the outset?

Porche G50 Transaxle

Postby Tony Smith » Thu Apr 23, 2009 3:42 pm

This is the one all the kit cars use when the UN1 won't do. Much stronger than the PRV. A well used one will still set you back 2 or 3 k. If you need a shaft upgrade its a better option. Does anyone know how strong the smaller transaxle gearbox is as fitted to the 1.7 21's, if it can handle say 200bhp it might be a cheap option for a light weight screamer engine in an 8.
Alpines - GTA 3.0 Turbo, GTA 3.0 Inj (Project DD), GTA 6.2 V8 (500 bhp) , R32 Skyline GTR, BMW Alpina B10 635 Highline, Alpina B10 E39 5 Series, Jaguar 4.2 XKR, Laguna 205GT, BMW 120d.

Hi Tony the 1.7 21 does not have a transaxle the engine sits across the bay and the front axle sits about 30-40mm further forward!

Ask Mr Dell as the front wings are different

Well 1 of them does

Postby Tony Smith » Fri Apr 24, 2009 2:10 pm

If its not the 1.7 then it must be a different version - I know some were transverse but there was also a version that used a transaxle box that wasn't the UN1
