AMAL VALVE A610 HELP

Postby phildini » Wed May 06, 2009 9:19 am

GUYS DO ANY OF YOU KNOW IF THESE AMAL VALVE ARE ALL THE SAME. THE ONE ON MY A610 HAS GOT A BROKEN END SO I FOUND ONE IN MY PARTS DEPARTMENT, WHICH I THINK IT CAME FROM MY OLD ESCORT RS TURBO OR MAYBE R21 TURBO. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE I CAN SEE IS THE COLOUR OF THE BASE, THE A610 IS BLACK AND THE BASE OF THE SPARE ONE IS A DARK BROWN. BESIDES THAT THEY LOOK THE SAME,.......ANY IDEAS??? :?

I believe these are used simply as on or off with a specific bleed when on. When the ECU decides to go for full boost, this valve is activated and it causes the pressure "seen" by the wastegate to drop. This is how all boost valves work but it depends on the size of the "leak"

Because of that, it would make sense that there're many different flavours. However, you could replace it with a very simple manual bleed valve. You'd lose your 2-stage boost, but in my experience of my 610 and Venturi, it often doesn't work properly anyway.

They are rubbish

We always use to take em off an throw them away in the R21TOC

Will be set for different level of boost 8psi and just under 14psi for a 21 turbo and the 610 doesn't run any where near that.

The Venturi 300 runs 14+psi as standard, and runs the standard valve. Presumably Venturi just tightened up the wastegate a touch.

The valve will add a proportion onto the base value, it's relative, not absolute.

SOOOOOOOO off then basically, put it in the bin? I think RS Turbo run a max of 9psi so these ANAL valve ( ) will be no good for the A610???

I do have a bleed valve from the days of the 21 turbo...... shall i use that?

Don't know anything about them, but these sites suggest removing them slows the build up of boost....
http://www.cosworth.hu/?p=22
http://www.bluecossie.com/index2.php?op ... df=1&id=98

It also sounds like the control is all ECU, not mechanical so they should be interchangeable if the same size.....

Have fun

These valves are not set for a certain pressure, they're set to provide a certain sized "leak". If it bleeds 25% then a wastegate set to 8psi will allow an intake pressure of 10psi.

Set to 12psi, it'll go to 15psi and so on.

No bleed valve "slows" the buildup of boost unless it's replacing a directly ecu controlled on/off valve, which these don't.

Some ECUs control boost directly - ie wait till boost reaches preset level in software, then allow pressure to the wastegate - if the control electronics fail, bingo, overboost. (some modern cars even use a vacuum actuated wastegate froim a reservoir, allowing the ecu to disallow any boost if there's a problem)

In this case, it's just an ecu controlled bleed. Replace with a manual bleed and the only difference you'll notice (other than the ability to run more boost) is that you can generate more boost on part throttle.

AMAL VALVE

Postby si21 » Thu May 07, 2009 1:56 pm

R21 users bin them as the ECU resricts boost in first gear. It does this electronically restricting boost to 8 psi, once out of first gear it opens the bleed valve and allows the car to run 13.2 psi if my memory serves me correctly. so people bin them to get full boost in first gear not because they are useless. A bleed valve can always come loose and the restrictor falls out, with disasterous consequences

People also wind the actuator in to give 14 psi and then wire the amal valve to a switch on the dash thus giving a two stage boost. The valve fooling the car into giving another 4psi = 18 psi. A Fun Button

Does the 610 have staged boost, if it does I would bin the Amal valve LOL 8) and just have all of it  However this said, the ECU on a 21 has a boost limiting valve and this is set to an upper limit. Is the 610 ECU set up in the same way? I cant remember without looking if its connected to the Amal valve or whether it works from manifold pressure, I think its manifold pressure TBH.

Does the 610 have staged boost,

That's what this valve is for :!:

There's no such thing as mechanical boost limiting valve, except the wastegate. Some flavours of renix ECU actually have an electronic cut run off a seperate pressure switch. It's in some of the wiring diagrams but I forget which. Paul C's Venturi 260 has it. I think it's a conservative safety feature in case the map sensor goes doolally, and can be un-plugged and leave it to the primary map.

Here’s my two pence worth,
Unless you are going to run above way standard boost levels I would leave a working one in place.
The basic type of valve is common to most late 80s early 90s turbocharged European cars who’s boost level was controlled by the injection computer (Renault, Ford, Saab etc)
The only difference between them was if a restrictor(s) were fitted to the outlet unions i.e. R21 turbo 2.3mm on the centre outlet, 1.9mm restrictor either fitted in pipe or on valve for the A610.
If you remove this valve and replace it with a traditional brass bleed valve you will loose engine torque at low rpm and the boost will spike erratically.

The injection computer controls this valve at a frequency of 12Hz and thus alters the amount of waste gate control pressure to obtain the maximum boost pressure held in the ECU memory 0.8bars for A610 (1759mb absolute)

If any restriction of boost level in first gear is required (R21T) this is carried out by the ECU which receives road speed information from the speedo hall sensor and calculates the ratio between road speed and how rapid the engine rpm increases, as within its memory it will have a calculation chart of gear ratios, it then varies the valve accordingly.
To derestrict this, all that is required is for the ECU to loose the road speed info and you will then have max boost available in first, should be terminal 3 for A610 depending an year.
Knowing Renault the chances are that any differences between valves fitted to their models would have now been superseded to one part number, which may follow soon

This may help or confuse matters even more??????

Not if you dont have it fitted a bleed or other control measure is used.

No body said it was mechanical its an electronic sensor in the ECU and is run from a pipe from the inlet manifold, the sensor/valve senses pressure. I beleive it cuts ignition if the engine receives more boost than the limit set for, its adjustable.
