New Renault on the drive.

Postby Trevor Skedge » Tue Aug 25, 2009 6:51 am

Adding to my cars I thought that as nobody else seemed to like this car I would give it a home. I knew the front spoiler wasn't to my taste and would ave to go but couldn't make up my mind about the stripes but the wheels I love.

Off with the spoiler and the spotlights.

I was hoping the front bumper would be in one piece underneath and require a fill/rub down and spray but sadly there were more mods beneath.

I have a few things to sort out but this is quite a nice car and first things are locating a front bumper (white would be good if anyone knows where there is one for sale) and sorting the lack of performance which I suspect is carb setup and timing. When I picked up the car the door locks worked fine but now the drivers side needs to be opened from the sill pull (I suspect the handle trigger rather than the solenoid, anyone know the easiest way to tell?).
I think the rest of the stripes are going to have to go as although they look much better in the flesh they are a little boy racer for my taste.

I bet you loved driving it home with all the stripes proper 80's style lol Can not believe the previous owner actually butchered the bumper to fix that merda in the front

Door handle easy to fix, call me

Despite the decals, I thought this car looked very good for the price. Will be interesting to see how you get on with it. :D

Dini,

Will give you a call.
My mission at the moment is removal of stripes and locating the missing horses. Looked through the manual and at first glance there is a lot to adjust but I guess that when I get round to it things will be easier. Any experts fancy giving me a tutorial :D

Thankfully the dealer saw this as not being a selling point and it is as I bought it so he must have got busy.

A whole pile of work was done on this car by Lifestyle Renault in Tumbridge Wells, including tubular rear arms and bushes, rear loom, all in the past year.

It sounds like its found a good home. I did briefly consider this one after the price was lowered the other week, but the styling of it put me off a bit. Are the headlight maskings coming off as well?

I think the headlamp masks will stay on until I can locate some reasonably priced glass to replace the cracked and de-laminating originals.
Yes there is a whole host of bills with the car and not sure how they usually drive but this does so very well, even if somewhat slowly at present.

Interior looks good, and original.
When I saw this car last year it had walnut effect sticky back plastic all over the place. Not my cuppa but looked interesting!!!

Nice car

Postby Tony Smith » Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:04 pm

I seriously considered this car a couple of months back for a track toy base - Steve Dell reckoned it was a nice solid car underneath the dubious add ons

I was a little surprised at the lack of interest and buyers at the price and assume it was the stripes and spoiler that put people off. Beneath these is a reasonable car and look forward to seeing what others think at the next Ace meet (unless of course it is back at the docks?).
Looking forward to sorting out the carb problems soon as I get an hour or two.

Trevor, you appear to have a nice Atmo there from the pics, however when it comes to the carbs, be very careful what you do to them until you fully understand their operation. I would check everything else, ie:- timing, distributor cap, rotor, plug leads, and fit new plugs if they have not been changed recently, Check all the rubber pipe work connecting the carbs to manifold, solinoid valves etc. any crack or leak in any one of these, and the carbs will not work properly. My own view is, if the carb linkage does not appear to have been adjusted since manufacture, I would not adjust unless absolutely necessary, these carbs are fixed jet type and the only real adjustment, except idle rpm and idle mixture, is with the linkage, and this is unlikely to have been altered. Again my view is they would have been set up for optimum performance at the factory. What I would do is clean all the jets, check the accelerator pump nozzles are functioning, lubricate all moving parts including the horizontal pully wheel which the accelerator cable is attached to, and take the two screws out of the cover of the automatic choke, and make sure all the pivotes and levers are not siezed...and lubricate them.
Clearly I do not know how much you know about this type of two stage carb, but just in case you did`nt know, you will not be able see the twin barrel butterflies open if you just rev the engin while stationary, they are operated by vacuum, and the level of vacuum required cannot be achieved without the engin being under load.
Hope this is of help
