John, have you had chance to have a look at your carbs yet? :lol: Sorry could not resist :oops:

.....all checked and OK, like I said they would be.....are you sure you did not get a whiff of the stale glue on your roof :lol: :lol: :lol:

John,

Thanks for the advice on the carbs. I thought my first port of call would be to check the plugs and timing and then replace all the vacuum pipes whilst checking they are correctly connected.

What spray did you recommend by the way?

I remember describing this before to you, here is a reminder as the memory cells seem to be failing you.....must be getting older :lol: :lol: :lol:

"If you are going to clean off the roof yourself, I filled an empty kitchen cleaner trigger spray bottle with acetone, lined the interior with old sheets, and by spraying small areas at a time, the adesive/foam comes away quite easily, but as Alan says, it is not a nice job."

...you might remember that Alan and I used a wood chisel, say 1 inch, (25mm for you youngesters) but remember to cover the interior with a couple of layers of old sheets and try and catch the soffened globs of glue before they drop.
Seriously, it is well worth getting it really clean before regluing new foam, you dont want to have to do it again, but also do it in a well ventilated spot, but as you are going to do very small areas at a time, say 6 x 6 inch spot, it is not really a problem. I did it all with the front seats as foward as possible, and sitting on the back seats, you can get to all the roof from there.

Had a brief look at the carbs today and first thing I noticed is the idle acceleration capsule actuating rod is not connected. I refitted this into the capsule however I think the capsule is U/S as when I suck through the vac connection there is no seal. Is this right?

When you say there is no seal, are you suggesting that the capsules diaphram is perforated? Try blowing as well, into the vac connection pipe and if you can hear or sense air escaping then yes, the capsule is u/s.

Yes if I keep blowing or sucking there is little resistance and can continue to suck until lungs are full, ie it leaks.

I went to Wings and wheels at Dunsfold today with the Lotus Esprit Forum and took the GTA as the Esprit has a technical hitch. Here are a few pics of the car now that I have removed a few of the stripes. The rest may stay or go, not sure yet. Car is performing a little better now but runs out of steam at 5000rpm so going to check the ignition advance next.

I would say they are not repairable....it might be worth seeing if Renault can get you one, the part No. is 79 10 020 830.....worth a phone call :wink:

Clearly I do not know how much you know about this type of two stage carb, but just in case you did`nt know, you will not be able see the twin barrel butterflies open if you just rev the engin while stationary, they are operated by vacuum, and the level of vacuum required cannot be achieved without the engin being under load.

Thanks for the advice. I don't have a problem tackling these carbs and by the look of it they have been "got at" already so I need to put this right. Yes I will change the spark plugs (any recomendations?) and have set the ignition timing. I need to look at the switch on the accelerator pedal first and then the function of the vac solenoids. Also plan on renewing the vac lines as a matter of course.The carbs bear witness to some adjustments having been carried out but the manual lays out the proper setup fairly clearly so will follow that.
Been a bit of a plum and burnt a couple of fingers so right hand is not up to speed at the moment, should be fine by the weekend.
