Battery for GTA (LM)

Postby Paul Tindall » Wed Sep 16, 2009 9:18 pm

I would be grateful for any advice on the right (best?) battery to fit to my LM. What it has looks fairly new, but of rather feeble spec being a 44ah, 360a Banner battery (fairly small and squarish). I can't find the recommended spec in the manual, though I guess it's there somewhere but I would have thought a much higher spec battery would be better. Some suppliers list batteries for the GTA with up to 640 cca and 64ah but these are the conventional size (around 240mm long) - not sure they'll actually fit the tray. I'm new to the GTA/LM and have nothing (except the 610) to compare with and whilst the existing battery starts the car OK, I wouldn't say that it whisks the engine over with any great relish so it does seem a bit under capacity.

063 (approx 45Ah) should be fine and fits the tray nicely or 065 (approx 55Ah) if you want a bit more juice.

Renault have them on offer for £20+VAT 063 and £25+VAT 065 in the MOTRIO brand.

Some 063s will fit an unmodified tray, some will require the base of the battery trimming. Alternatively you will have to flatten the leading edge of the tray if it hasn't already been modified.

I've only ever fitted 063s to GTAs even with a large stereo install and have never had any problems.

(A610 needs a larger battery at least 075)

That's cheap for a battery. I got quoted £156 + VAT by my friendly dealer for a battery for the A610. Not that they had one available, obviously!!

I did a bit of research prior to my trip to the North Wales Club tour, and came up with a Varta B18, 44ah and 440a starting power, circa £50......3 year Warranty :D
I consider starting power more important than amp hrs unless you intend leaving the car with lights on for extended periods etc. You will have to trim the two end lips off as Mr Dell explained, to fit unmodified tray, but fits nicely with the terminals in the right place, as per the original.
