Turbo (Diesel) Question

Postby jon_viola » Sat Oct 17, 2009 5:33 pm

Yes i know, not Alpine and not of any interest to anyone normal person but:

The Quartet Shitter is a Td and has boost under low load conditions but on the motorway up hills or with you foot right down she has no go and if possible slightly less and "hesitates" Is this down to a weak actuator?

Cheers

.. umm sounds more like fuel, you are controlling fuel delivery in a diesel, they run oxygen rich (open induction tract), so if your pump or injectors are not delivering the fuel or phased correctly you'll get similar to your problems, turbo shouldn't give those problems even if sh***ed.

Have you got a boost gauge that confirms the turbo operation, or just seat of pants?

What's a quartet shitter?

The HDi's run a vacuum actuated wastegate and the ECU then has complete control of the boost, including turning it off completely. Would expect an engine management light though.

Older mech injected stuff, sounds like a split hose = lots of noise and no go. Recently halped a mate fit a new head to an XUD9 - those engines are so wonderfully simple. Running it up with no intake manifold felt soooo wierd.

what vacuum? 8) probably just an actuator dash pot, but not off the induction tract as there won't be any vac.

XUD9 are great bullet proof and love chip fat    need the inline fuel heater, std in the turbo, and more than happy dragging up sludge... nothing better than the feeling of only having to stop off at the petrol stealers to put some free air in. Usual Pug body rot and just fell apart even though the boot always washed with oil

HDi's run a vac pump on the end of the camshaft (as do the XUD's that aren't in Hydro-pneumatic Citroens - but only for the brake servo on them).

EGR valve, turbo wastgate control is all vac actuated. The outlet (or inlet depending how you look at it :D ) on my Xantia got blocked and the turbo immediately lost all boost cos the vacuum holds the wastegate shut, controlled by the ECU.

Thanks for all your help guys, I should however make it clear that the quartet shitter is a Ford Scorpio Estate with the dreadful VM turbo diesel engine

it sounds like the actuator I think as its been sitting a while and the engin was newly installed back in Jan and the pump looks pretty new to me....

Might just be a split hose, check them all carefully. The hose from the turbo to the inter-cooler just split on my V40 tdi - lot's of stuttering and kangaroo-ing, strange 'whooshing' noise from under the bonnet, absolutely no go, really struggling to get up hills and a smoke screen of black smoke out the back under load! Fitted a new hose, easy job - just a couple of jubilee clips, and car is fit as a fiddle, rocketing along nicely again. :D

Split hose on an air mass metered engine will cause over-fuelling and smoke - old mech injected stuff will just lose power.
