GTA Turbo - Mixture adjustment ?.

Postby Paul Taylor » Mon Jan 25, 2010 10:56 pm

Hi all,

I notice that my GTA Turbo smells like it is running very rich, even when its at full running temp.

I will be giving the engine a full service within the next week or two, but is there anyway to adjust the idle mixture ?.
I have a CO and HC meter, so can set accurately.

Thanks in advance....

There is a CO pot on the rhs of the engine bay which is adjustable. It sits near the coil pack.

Yes that rings a bell but others can confirm.

Where are the fumes coming from? If they are in the cabin they could be coming from the fuel tank?

Just if you are standing outside the car while the engine is running.
It smells very strong. Even at full operating temp.

Ok so it's from the engine end then.

Just check your fuel pipes as well, they tend to crack with age which if the CO is OK could be your problem.

Could be another sensor issue ,air or water temp gone wrong and making it run rich .

Welcome to Renault Alpine Ownership

Anything with a 60 prefix part number is generally Alpine only and you will have to go through Renault for. Anything else you can get cheaply elsewhere.

Rotor and Dizzy cap are available from halfords for around £40 for the two.

Spark plugs are a plenty on ebay, I got 6 Champions for £5 delivered - they are fine by the way.

Oil filter is the same as the 21 Turbo one, same with the air filter but they are not that expensive for OE at renault are they?

What do you guys recomend as the best Plug for a GTA ?.

From my Saab days, and Saab turbo tuning. NGK's always performed the best.
NGK recomend the BP7EFVX for the 2.5 Turbo.

The rotor and cap are the same as a mid 80's 3.5L BMW 635 and the like. Buy the Bosch for a bit more money over the Italian, I think Breva brand. Myself and 3 others have had problems with the Breva caps getting a siliconey ooze inside them that would track electrically when boost would come on.

Was stuck in traffic on the way home yesterday, and the exhaust emissions were killing me.. literally !. Had to have the windows fully open.

Anyway, when i got home i was going to get my Gas meter out and have a go and changing the idle mixture, but i was having a good prod around the engine bay, checking hoses etc... and found that one spark plug leads was actually off !. Well just resting on the plug.
Popped that back on, and checked all the others.. And now i have sweet smelling emissions !. Clever that...... lol.

So ive been running on 5cyl more or less since ive had the car. Odd since i could not feel the missfire.

Lazy lumps like the PRV run ok on 5.
Mine was running on 4 one time and was not too bad actually, but I knew something was wrong as it was too lumpy on idle and did not rev as freely as normal.

I was looking at the Oil filter for the GTA. Its tiny !.
Never seen such a short oil filter.

Do you guys fit a larger sized filter, or stick with the original part ?.
