A610 Handbrake Cables

Postby BIG_MVS » Sun Feb 28, 2010 6:12 pm

My A610 failed the MOT this week on the handbrake not working at all on the drivers side. Had a quick look today and the arm does not seem to move as freely as the passenger side and seems to stick slightly when returning.

Anybody think it could be the cable or the caliper? The caliper works fine via the foot brake by the way.

I think it may be the handbrake cable has either stretched or is basically knackered, looking at the parts book it does not show a RHD specific but I want to make sure I order the right one from Simon Auto. Anyone ordered some 610 cables recently and can let me know? I'm guessing I need to order the LHD drivers side if that makes sense?

What side do you drive on ? That is how one should always quote it ....
Just ask for the longer or shorter one

Hi Martin,
Mine had exactly the same problem-the part number is 60 01 024 178 for the RHS on RHD car(from the bag). Same part number as a LHD/LHS one so you were right in your logic.
At least you haven't bought a new caliper only to find out the cable was at fault (unlike me).
Get the easing oil on the old cable now as they seize in the caliper and floor.
reassembling the handbrake mechanism afterwards is a good game too.

Cheers
Lee

i did all my rear breakes last year, you will have to saw off the old cable at the caliper end as they will be realy siezed in and hammer out the end.if a new cable dosn't sort it and it turns out to be the caliper you can have them reconed, mine cost £90 but they came back like new  its all straight forward just a bit of a fiddle. oh buy the way i hope your new cable fits, i got a pair from renault and they were about an inch short. ended up having to modify the hand break assembly.good luck, need any help just shout

Sometimes they stick in like a bar steward and others they come straight out ...
The cable was probably correct but the caliper off a BX ....

A610 Handbrake Cable

Postby Stuart D » Mon Mar 01, 2010 10:05 pm

The main problem I encountered, when trying to fit a new caliper (albeit to a GTA Atmo), was freeing the cable from the caliper body. I ended up using a junior hacksaw to cut a groove in the lug (along the direction of the cable), applied Lusol/Plusgas, and prised the groove open, slightly with a screwdriver.

I don't know GTA's but I think its probably harder on an A610- there is no slot in the caliper to get a saw on the old cable- the cable goes through a hole, not a slot.
In my case I removed the caliper and cable and then clamped it down and drifted out the cable from the bottom end. Got it all apart without damage but of course it means a brake bleed afterwards.
Makes fitting pads easier next time as you can do with the manual says and just remove the handbrake cables before swinging the caliper out of the way- stops the damage to handbrake cables that happens otherwise...and probably is the start of the sticking in the first place.
Not my favorite job on an Alp....

I got mine from Renault and then wished I'd gone to speedy cables - quite pricey.
