GTA Turbo - Engine durabillity for racing ?.

Hi all,

I know that some of you take your GTA's on track days, and hill climbing etc...

How durable would you say the GTA's Turbo engine is ?. Given an engine in good condition ?.

I might be going to Nurburgring this year, and i am wondering if to take the GTA or not ?. I.e. would a 21yr old Z7U take 10mins of full power and high RPM without falling apart. And get me back home again.

Or should i get myself a cheap project car for some "ring" fun.....

I think you will be fine seen as your running it every day? If it had a weak point you would have found it by now...Overheating is probably your main possible issue, take plenty of water!

Why buy another car which may have more problems?

Yep its my daily driver. 35 miles per day total.
I would say i drive it quite hard too. It sees 5500rpm at least 3 times a day, if not more. Nothing gone wrong yet.

Temp always stays below 90. Oil pressure is on 3 at idle, and almost 6 when above 2000rpm.

Im just worried about the sustained high rpm, and use of frequent high boost. That would be seen on the Ring.

if you want to try out you car go on one of the bruntingthope days. they are a great way of finding out the capeabilities of the car. i found that mine was about 10%down on power and that standard breakes can not cope with hard use.you will have a great day and meet some very interesting members of the club, its worth a go.

My car has Drilled and Slotted disks all round. Together with EBC GreenStuff pads. Ive found them quite effective so far !.

if it's been well maintained and looked after you shouldn't have a problem..... but just in case make sure you've got top notch recovery....

anything can happen on the ring..... clutch/ brake fluid boils...... make sure that is of the highest quality.... the last thing you need is the only pedal working is the accelerator when you're half way round a lap and over heating the next one..... make sure it's all working hunky dory before you go....

the club has been several times and cars have gone round a few laps and survived the trip home

Paul, Old cars have limped there and limped back and done a few laps there too..... and they were fine.
As Andy says, just make sure everything is top notch and that you have recovery to get home if needed. Best to go in a group, safety in numbers. Last year we went about September 21 I think for a long weekend.

If it's your first visit there, don't go mad.
It's far too big/long to go fast on until you've been there quite a few times.

As everyone's said, provided your car is well seriviced you shouldn't have a problem.

Clutch issues

You might find issues with with your clutch fluid boiling if you use it in anger for any length of time, I've had this several times at track days. The clutch slave cylinder sits close to the turbo and in prolonged hard use thins the fluid so much it becomes very hard to change gear, soon as it cools down its fine again. Make sure you have fresh DOT 5 fluid in it. On standard boost I doubt you'd have any engine problems.

Come and try it out at Bruntingthorpe on the 30th. It it survives the day there it will be OK for the ring!
