GTA Tunnel/Dash paint finish

Postby Paul Tindall » Tue Apr 20, 2010 8:27 pm

Anyone know what the tunnel cover and parts of the dash are coated with on the later (circa 1990) GTAs? I have just acquired a replacement panel for the steering wheel underside (the one that encompasses the ignition switch) and it needs overcoating with the material (medium grey, slightly soft touch) that my original has. I can see that the original is the same underneth the grey coating as the replacement panel. What I'm looking for is a sprayable paint in the right colour and with the right texture - I guess someone must have had to refurb similar parts?

Many thanks

sorry paul but its not possible to match the intierior trim/dash coating. the best thing to do would be to remove all the adjacent panels and paint them all.paint manufacturers have hundreds of colour formulations so there will be one pretty close. if you have a compressor and spraygun you could get some mixed up, keep it a bit on the thick side and spray it at a low presure to get the thick lumpy finish. if its bare plastic apply some plastic parts primer first. would be nice to use an aerosol but they usualy
contain thin paint and that would'nt give you the original finish.

I think that's through the 'plastidip' company or something similar, only trouble is that their colours are pretty basic (mostly primary) and I don't think they do greys - of course Stephen may know different??

GTA finish is black plastidip spray available from Frost.

Don't know about the le mans, may be a lighter shade.

Thanks Stephen. The grey is quite dark - I think I will give Plastidip UK a ring to ask their advice - maybe the black isn't too deep, or maybe they can do other colours to order?? Some of their other products (HCF for instance) come in a wider range of colours. Actually the panel I want to refinish is so hidden (under the steering column - the one I asked you about before) - that the shade isn't all that crucial

Paul

N.B. Plastidip suggested mixing to match (black + white mainly as you would expect!). Dip can then be thinned (about 45%) and sprayed with pretty much any spray system.
