Changed Oil today. Now worried !.

Postby Paul Taylor » Sat May 01, 2010 2:24 pm

Hi all,

I changed my Engine Oil today. With my bargain 8L of Shell Helix Ultra. 15w/50. And a large size WIX oil filter.

The current engine oil was unknown, and it was very black. It also had a very small oil filter fitted. Only about 2" deep.

Anyway i drained the oil into 2 large drip trays. Let drain for 30mins. (Oil was Hot). Then changed filter and refilled.
Moving on..... When i emptied my drip trays, there was lots of bit of Carbon on the bottom. Almost crunchy and hard to touch. It looked like flakes that might have broken away from inside the rocker covers ?.
Also on the bottom of the drip tray were what looked like little bits of brass, tiny in size.

Any idea what this maybe ?. Im worried now.

Perhaps i should change my oil again in a few months to see if the same comes out again.

PS: Oil pressure was showing "3", at idle when hot. And just under "6" above 2000rpm.
With the new 15w/50, its now showing just under "6" at idle when hot.

Timing chain guides have a hard plastic liner on them.

Any pictures of the offending items?

No sorry, i didnt think to take a picture. And ive cleaned up all the drip trays now.

The engine itself is nice and queit. With the exception of 1 tappet on the left bank.
It could be that years of gunk are starting to break loose now that the car is being used as a daily driver. Since its last few years have been spent locked away in a garage.

I did another few jobs today.
Did a Throttle Body Service, and i was glad i did. The butterfly was in a right mess, and the bore was black in junk.
So lots of a carb cleaner later and its spotless.
Also with the aid of my son i checked the throttle cable, only to find it was not actually opening fully. Only about 80%.
So a bit of adjustment later and it now opens 100%.

I also changed the air filter, and again, im glad i did.
The air filter housing literally had a full handfull of leaves, and the filter was the worst i have ever seen a air filter. It was totally black and heavily coated in dirt.
IMO it had not been changed in at least 5 years to get that bad.

Another busy day tomorrow.. I have to service the wifes car..
