GTA: Fuel gauge not working. Now fixed !!.

Postby Paul Taylor » Sat Jun 05, 2010 5:32 pm

Hi all,

For the last 2 weeks my fuel gauge has just been reading "----------" all the time.
So today i decided to pull the sensor out of the tank.

Not knowing exactly what i would find, it turns out to be a alloy tube, about 20" long.
Once all the fuel drained out, i decided to strip it apart. There is a single screw on the bottom. Once this is removed, pull off the bottom cap.
You can then work off the top part, and gently pull the unit out of the tube.
There is a float inside that slides up and down a central shaft which has resistive windings.
The float is connected to the top part of the sensor by a lightly coiled brass wire.
This brass wire on mine had broke away from the top, so hence the circuit was broken.

With a carefull bit of soldering, i re-attached the brass wire to the top of the sensor. And then carefully re-assembled.

Now my fuel gauge appears to be working correctly.
Will know more over the comming weeks, after a few re-fills.
I will do a full computer reset when i fill the tank tomorrow.

The next time i filled the car up though did worry a bit about a soldierd joint emersed in fuel.
however that was 7 years ago and is still going strong.
A new sender unit did eventualy turn up but is still in the box.

Filled up this morning to the brim.
And then did a full ECU reset.

Now shows 15.0 GAL exactly. So fingers crossed !. I have a full petrol can up-front, just incase. :)
