Gearbox upgrade

Postby Tony Smith » Wed Jul 07, 2010 8:33 pm

Might be worth thinking about doing some gearbox strengthening while its out, mines just decided it doesn't like 320 ft/lbs so if yours is making much more than that it ain't gonna last long

What broke, Tony? Was it 5th or the input shaft coupler? Gimme a shout if you haven't already approached Kevin

Youiz the official main agent now Mr. Monkey biz?

What ratios are available as 5 and 6 speed, or can you choose? I assume LSD option as well? Lead-time and prices? Fully built or also available as kit? Any modifications to the case needed?

I can certainly improve on what Lotus pay for the input shaft/gearsets and quaife ATB, Kevin kindly offers me trade on his stuff.

The 6-speed 'box is a dog box and is a duplication of a williams box which Kevin bought the rights to IIRC. They're short ratios, 6th between 4th and 5th in a standard GTA box.

http://www.gtoracing.co.uk/images/6SpeedGearkit.pdf

The 5-speed has whatever 3rd 4th and 5th you want based on stock UN1 gears. 1st and 2nd have been raised from standard and are part of the shaft:

http://www.gtoracing.co.uk/images/5SpeedGearkit.pdf

Prices the last time I checked were £2879 and £899 for the 5-speed set and diff respectively. Expensive? Depends how you look at it. If you want to take more than 300hp, the only other option is a Porsche box and all the headache involved with fitting it.

Very nice stuff indeed. There was also a chap near Farnborough who was doing single piece input shafts and 5 speed gear sets helical cut than straight for about 2k I think from memory, but may be not available now and the ratios were aimed at V8s :(

Anyway, I think this needs to go on a separate thread than Hijack Clee's project - especially as it's more interesting!

I think that turbo will be fine, wouldn't lose any sleep over it, you should be well into gearbox breaking territory

Yes, Derek Bell. Kevin has the lowdown on exactly what happened there, but as I remember it, he didn't get it entirely right and Kevin's setup is not the same. I don't think Derek is doing his setup any more.

No it wasn't Derek Bell, he was up North anyway, Derek's gears were made by Quaife.
the name of the company was a rip-off of the GKN tx group, and used an F1 specialist gear cut company to make the gears. The helical cut gears allowed greater torque capability than the straight cut
I have the FEA models.

Lee I think you will want to find a UN5 input shaft, I'll post up a pic :-).

Gearbox smearbox ....I'll worry about that if it breaks ...hopefully it will ...or driveshafts .....

The guys have machined my flywheel to the new cover pattern but can't get it true on the friction face with the cnc ,the way it's being clamped .It has about .008" run on it so I'm off to pick it up then drop it off in Derby to have it skimmed on a big lathe ......

Once that is done I just need to put it back together .Big turbo is ready to fit .

Ahh no ...just saw your text this afternoon ....
I shall see if there is a local RS outlet or order online .Used to be one in Leicester nextdoor to one of my customers ,been there today to discuss a project but RS shop has closed down .....

Place in Derby couldn't do the flywheel ,something about them only able to do cast ones  ...Still ,they might come in handy for other bits and bobs
Ended up at one of their outsourcing outfits in Kegworth that can do the job and they too might come in handy for bits and bobs

I'm taking the next three weeks off from design work , told them all I'm on shutdown so some great progress should be made on a few fronts this month
