Rusty Renault water.......

Postby simonsays74 » Fri Jul 16, 2010 5:39 pm

Not wanting to hi-jack a thread......

Just a bit of info following on from JohnC's comment,

JohnC wrote:Just a bit of useless info on these reservoirs.....according to the parts list, the Atmo one is different to the Turbo, Le Mans & 610. :?
I am off to my friendly Renault Parts assistants to check if available, and price,
I fancy changing mine as when the Alp was new it had Type C coolant which tended to go brown ( or allowed the metal pipes to rust ) and stain the reservoir. Since then they changed to Type D which does not discolour the reservoir, ( and it does not appear to let the pipes rust either ) and like jonc, I would like to be able to see the level through the tank

The Type C rotted the piston liners and that is there the red water comes from!

This stuff also rotted the 3 main water pipes up the centre of the car. Lovely!

And the real reason type C went like this is that people used tap water to top up instead of the correct pre-mixed bottles or ignored the coolant change schedule every two years or did not flush the system out properly during coolant change.
It also degraded if the engine overheated (Coolant boiling off)

The mix was changed to type D due to enviromental protection laws & techicnal improvements with engines, which has now changed to another formulation of type D to cater for the modern crop of engines & enviromental issues (type D-2)

Type C does not degrade witin the envioment and remains toxic
Type D breaks down more quickly and is less harmful, but still has to be disposed of correctly.

It also used to be with Renault that Type C was green and Type D pink but as more demands were placed on Type D it change back to a green colour (D-2) to indicate a different blend.
Some anti freeze mix from various manufactures are blue, pink or green but they should now comply with the same standards and the colour is down to dye.

Further to RED21`s info, I was informed by Renault at the time of change from C to D type that type C was causing problems with the different metals used in Renault engines, which does seem to tie up with the following Wikipedia entry which RED21 points us to:-

"...corrosion inhibitors are also added to help protect vehicles' cooling systems, which often contain a range of electrochemically incompatible metals (aluminum, cast iron, copper, lead solder, etc.)."

...and from the difference I found between the two types, it appears that the coolant manufactures got it wrong with the type C
