Jeez a22 touched a nerve has it

Unfortunately Mr Clarkson uses this "demolition" of rare and wonderful cars as a form of entertainment.

Looking from another viewpoint when is the last time an Alpine got this kind of publicity, alot more interest in the marque has been started because of this stunt, I agree it was a waste of a good car but try and look at the positives, it's done now isn't it!!!

Yes thanks for comment; ok don't get me wrong. It's not really so much a question of 'touching a nerve'..... more a constructive critiscism/ comment....

To be fair, I do actually like Clarkson and Co's productions in general (I often watch and think they are good)

Well, I don't really care that much if people choose to smash up an A610 or Ferrari. That is their poragative, however stupid/ funny/ humorous or whatever. If they own it, they can do what the hell they like with it. Eat it even, for all I care! (would like to see that!)

Yes, also I could agree that the destruction of cars (rare or not) could in fact serve as a form of entertainment.

I just think it would have been a better action to hear discussion on why (reasons)the car was 'good looking but only when you have cateracts', and the reasons why the 'Venturi was rubbish' rather than just smashing it to pieces. Yet it would be interesting to hear so; maybe it is ugly? I could somewhat agree! Sometimes I do look at my GTA and think it doesn't look quite right from some angles! Maybe it is dangerous? I have questioned that myself often. Would maybe rather prefer to crash a Volvo than the GTA, not that I would 'prefer' to crash anything!

I do infact credit these people with skill at making productions, they must have an apt for it as it is their jobs and they are successful, like them or not. Would prefer to value their comments and expertise than just see a car smashed to pieces, without any apparent reason, if you see what i mean?
So, just thought it would have been more appropriate to discuss /criticise even, the A610, rather than destroy it! I wonder if there was only 1 left and they destroyed that!?

Anyway, as I have said and the former comment (BIG MVS) it probably does in fact serve as a form of entertainment, like it or not. I do understand that; yet I don't know if it is particulary good for the cars reputation at all?!!

I said to myself that I wouldn't watch this DVD till I had an A610 sitting on my drive. I watched it tonight. Jeez, what a waste of a bloody great A610. Theres plenty of rough Alpine's out there to prove a point should it HAVE to be done but to do it to that particular car was rediculous. I understand the need for entertainment but to compare a classic 17-20 year old design with todays supercars is totally unfair and I honestly expect better from Clarkson (or do I?) And to say the Venturi was rubbish as well...I know times move on but surely he should judge these things in comparative fairness!

Am so pleased to have my A610, I almost feel a duty to protect these wonderful cars from people like JC. I am convinced there are few cars on planet earth that get such a reaction as when I'm driving my yellow A610. And generally it's a nice 'what the hell is it, glad someone owns one' kind of reaction rather than 'there's another prick in a Porsche/Ferrari/BMW' reaction. That's the beauty of the car for me. People don't resent that you own it, they are pleased that cars with soul and character exist. I can honestly say, there is no other supercar that I would rather own at any price. The A610 has always been my ultimate fantasy supercar. Now it IS my ultimate supercar, I just love it (quirks and all!). :D

Too right mate! I totally agree. You never see Ferrari/Porsche/BMW drivers approached at petrol stations etc by people with friendly banter and questions about your car or even just an appreciative smile and nod. :)

Did you see the guy by Frodsham swing bridge (in a white MX5 I think coming from motorway) who was well impressed by us 2 driving along together (or maybe he was just laughing at the Alpine's airhorn lol). You just get a bit of respect in these cars. Rightly so! I've lost count by the number of Scooby drivers who give me a thumbs up too. They seem to be particularly knowledgeable about Alpine for some reason?

Petrol stations are great when your standing there with the 'bonnet' up feeding your beloved with V Power. :) Shame it isn't a bit cheaper but never mind eh!

I took my A610 for a special treatment ( will soon post a full thread about it with pictures!!! ) and this is a place where they work on very very expensive cars, but I could not belive how many people came out from near by businesses to have a look at the car as it was coming off the trailer, and it's not even all together...... I mean it's all stripped.

A610s are getting more and more accepted in the UK for the classic exotic cars that our mainland European cousins know they are. I think they have a bit of a credibility problem with the association with the Renault badge and consequent low price but my car loving friends admire and respect it.

I’ve just come back from holiday and jumped into the A610 at the airport and was just amazed at how great these cars are.

Just thought I'd reply to this thread, although I realise an old one......

I don't come on here often. (I came on as I got an email about tomorrow's meet) ....

I don't own and have never owned any Renault.

However I love cars. I am interested in cars. I enjoy driving them. And I appreciate good engineering and styling.

I hate to see any car (good or bad) vandalised.
I do not consider the destruction of cars 'entertainment'.
TBH - even when it is some cheap car that I would personally not want, I do sometimes look at them and think someone once loved it.

Now in the context of a TV show, £10k or £20k is cheap for a stunt. The cost of TV shows is such that if wrecking a £9k car gave them 10 minutes of footage, they will have seen it as reasonably good value.
However, I don't see why this is deemed entertainment. The programme is supposed to be aimed at car fans. If you are a car fan, why would you enjoy seeing a good car destroyed?

So, I am unbiased not being an owner.... but I fully agree with you - what a shame, what a waste and why on earth use a good example.

Clarkson DVD

Postby lamboman » Sun Aug 15, 2010 9:48 pm

I agree I think it was a shame but look on the bright side it may have increased the value of ours as there is one less.

It's funny in 1994 I owned a yellow A610 index J457 or 456 JTP which was the clarkson demo/press car. During that footage he did nothing but praise the 610.

However there is no point slagging a car off in late 2009 that was built in the mid nineties. Especially when your going to smash it up.

Ps eldorado got me into the A610.

It's very impressive the way it changes from 610 to TR7. You'd really never know!
