Ground fault?

Postby R1313 » Tue Feb 08, 2011 8:57 pm

I scratch my head for my D501. Have concluded that I must have a ground fault. Does anyone recognize these faults?

1. The battery drained.
2. The fan motor can not be completely shut down. (with ignition on)
3. The interior lights work with the fixture loose from the car, but is constantly mounted.
4. Speedometer is dead.
5. Lighting of the climate control, death.
6. Right parking light wire without tension.

Grateful for advice before I dismantle the whole interior. /Jörgen

1. Question....how long do you leave your car with battery connected before you notice the battery is drained?
2. This is normal, as due to the lack of ram air effect, it is necessary to run the fan at slow speed when the ingition is on to ventilate the interior of the car.
3. The interior light does not have to be fixed to the car to make it work, as the earth return is with a wire, as the fixing point for the interior light is GRP. Not too sure what you mean about the light being "constantly Mounted".
4. Suggest you check the speed sensor connector which is mounted on the rear inner wheel arch on the right hand side looking from the rear of the car.
5. Check bulb, if bulb is OK, there is a possibility that it is connected to the right parking light circuit....see 6.
6. If the rear right parking light is also without tension.... check the fuse supplying both those lights with tension (12volts). Fusr rating is 5 amp.

I hope I have understood you questions correctly.

1. In my experience leaving an Alp for two months with battery connected will drain the battery to a level where it will not start. I disconnect my battery by detaching the quick release earth connector if I do not intend using the car for a while.
5. You will have to trace the wire back from the bulb to the fuse in order to trace this fault. The circuit below is for the 1990 model year, but I suspect it is somewhat the same for the earlier Alps.
