Leaky Box

Postby chris » Sun Apr 03, 2011 2:43 am

I have a big gearbox leak .
Shortly after arriving at work my colleagues informed me of a large puddle of oil under the GTA . It appeared to be coming from the gearbox and it smelt like gbox oil . I jacked it up and the oil was sprayed on everything under the rear of the car. I wiped it all off with a rag and drove it home at the end of the day 12min journey.
The clutch worked the same and gbox was no different , 10 mins from home I could smell the oil and it left a trail in the driveway as i pulled up.
I immediately jacked it up and the oil was dripping from the inside of the bell housing ,flywheel area.
All engine and brake fluids have not changed level.
I drained the gbox and recoverd 2litres of oil , so it lost 1 litre .
The oil was dark and cloudy and appeared to have no metal particals.
My thoughts are the only place it could come out is the imput shaft seal but why so much?
If the breather was blocked i would assume oil would come out of the driveshaft seals first !

Help required thanks

Hi Chris,
It sounds to me, from reading your post, that as you say, there is a failure of an oil seal in the gear box, unfortunately it is not a quick job. I had this many years ago, and there is an oil seal deep within the gearbox requireing the box to be split to get to it. My understanding from Renault at the time was that it was a common fault, as when I got the new seal it was a modified one. I suspect that that most Alps have had it changed not too soon after they were purchased, but as most Alps are S/H, owners never knew. I will try and find a pic of where it is situated and post it up for reference.
Hope thid helps.

Found a pic.......it was suggested by Renault that the tube was replaced at the same time which I did, but not too sure if it was really necessary :?

Hopefully the later models had this modification carried out at the factory :!:

Pulled the engine and gbox out today .
After removing the gearbox from the engine i found it was definately coming from the input shaft seal.
I then removed the bell housing from the gearbox and found this .

The end is broken off the pinion allowing the pinion pin to fall out.

So as the end of the pinion broke off it tore a hole in the input shaft tube.
