This appears to happen once the car is up to full temperature, just wondering if the is a temperature switch, or something like automatic choke that could be restricting fuel or summet? Update 4
Swapped the fuel pressure regulator this evening and went for a test run. Drove for 90 minutes, nailed the hell out of it... not one blip or problem, no loss of power, and the rear pump didn't get noisy at any point - looks like it's solved :D :D :D

Being a cynical git, I'm going to refit the original tomorrow night and confirm that the fault returns... just to be sure, as I'd hate for the fault to have coincidently gone, only to return when I'm halfway up Stelvio pass in 2 weeks.

Many thanks to all for advice & tips, special thanks to clee for the regulator... let me know how much I owe you and preferred payment method.

Now I just need to fit a new stereo, and maybe try do something with my headlamp lenses (they're the only external part that lets the car down).

Great stuff, well done 8)

If you're going to go nailing up the pass, suggest making a mid point stop, and at the least stop completely (key off) and start the engine... The Renix 1 ecu only adjust for atmospheric pressure on initial power up.... higher you go the leaner your mixture will get... Just something to consider when you are blasting it up 2700 m or what ever it is, on a hot day

Well done.

And glad it appears you nailed it in time. Once they start to fail it's only a matter of time before they totally split and you end up with bores, sump and everything full of petrol

Lucky for me if happened on the driveway as I was opening the gates to go up to Paul Sage's for the second attempt at fixing it. No idea what would have happened if it had split when it was up to speed!
I'm just here for the gasoline.

Excellent!

Apologies if I led you up a different path but it was exactly the same symptoms as I had. It's good to have a spare front pump though as they are quite a common failure with cars that have stood for a while.

Take lots of pics in the alps and enjoy

Well... refitted old regulator and went for a looonnnggg drive... no issues :? not a single murmur. I've obviously disturbed something else whilst in there changing the regulator. I did fill up with petrol, so I'm now running her back to down to 4 gallons (which is what she had when the fault was previous), in case the full tank is masking the fault somehow?

So, reallllyy happy that she's running, but slightly concerned that the issue will raise it's head again... at probably the most inopportune moment  [/b]

Figures

Did you notice whether the vac pipe to the fuel reg was damaged or squashed in any way ? It can get trapped under the plenum especially if not an original pipe .

Yes thanks, read about that in a thread somewhere so checked it, and it's all good. Only other thing I did was to 'look' at the TDC sensor wire and connector... unplugged and replugged it - perhaps it was a weak connection or something?

I've had the old regulator on since Friday now, and have driven 100+ miles without a single blip. I think I'll keep the other regulator and take it with me to the Alps just in case... PM how much you want for it and where to send the payment.

Other 'pre Alps' jobs...
  • Got a shiny new Sytec glass fuel filter (from Demon Tweeks) to replace the front filter (closer to original than a crappy plastic/cardboard version
  • Received bag of bits from Rob's breaker, cleaned up and fitted side grill/trims, turbo inlet hose and all important alarm remote sensor cover
  • Got some 5mm Lexan polycarbonate to do a temporary replacement of the headlamp lenses. Heat gun at the ready this weekend for moulding it to the slight curve of the glass and some tippex or similar to put some vague white horizontal lines on 8) as an aside, I may have found a local company that can make near identical original lenses... will update when I have more info

Leaving next Friday... will definitely post a load of photos when I get back (or maybe even whilst there if I can get WiFi).
