oil level sensor ??

Is this the oil level check sensor that activates when you put the ignition on? (mine doesnt work!) Its bottom left of engine, can anyone tell me where the wire that should go to it comes from, the only wire I can see in that area is going to the brake pads

Im nearly on the road, just waiting for tax disc to come through,as Ive had to re-register it, Its been a pain, I had to trailer it to the local DVLA testing station so they could check its numbers matched their records as it was in Irealand for a few years.
Thanks for all your help so far in getting me on the road, Im sure I will have what may seem like daft questions for you in the future to keep me on the road !! :D

The oil level sensor is on the right hand side just above the sump line near the oil filter take off.

Before commenting on this, would it be possible to post a pic of all the wired items surrounding the oil filter, ie:- a general pic with the oil filter in the middle. :wink:

That is an oil pressure sender but it's redundant so will have no wire .The actual sender is on the other side near the filter and the oil level sits near there also mounted vertically into the bottom plate .

That was my thinking Lee, thats why I wanted the pic to confirm that the sender and switch did exist on the other side :wink:

Yes ,should have twin wire on the other side ,one pressure ,one light .
That sensor shown is for light ,plunger type and must not be replaced with just a plug .There is a hole at 90 to it's movement into the timing cover area so if replaced with anything else it will "wee wee" oil into cover and lose all pressure :shock:

It could be the level indicator. Lee if you remember the 25 turbo has this on the left hand side. Has your car had an engine change?

It's not going to be reading level halfway up the block now is it Dave :lol: :wink:
It's a pressure sender ,it's in the oil gallery .The oil level indicator is in the bottom plate .

Not necessarily....There are two options for the switch and sensor being on the offside of the block, 1. Like you say, one unit which has two connections on it for the sensor and the switch, and 2. There is a "T" piece protruding from the block with the sensor screwed into one outlet, and the switch into the other outlet, mine is like that.
There is a third option with switch on one side and sensor on the other, I suspect in the earlier Alps.

A bit confusing here, my feeling is that mufty`s pic shows the switch, as in all 3 options, if you look at the parts list, the pressure sensor is the larger unit of the two.

Interesting point you make about the switch being replaced by a plug.......mine has a plug and is original. :wink:

Twin wire ...either attached to one combined unit or two separate units with T .
It's a pressure switch that operates the dash light .There are two types .
One as shown is a plunger type for blocks with holes in and the other is a std looking pressure sensor ,short with a small hole in the end .
If yours has a plug then it must be a block without a hole .It's about the block not the sender .Put a plug in a block that had a plunger sender and goodbye oil pressure

clee: as soon as I posted this I realised it wouldn't be the oil level sender so high up the block, its obviously the "youve seriously over filled it" senser lol:
I've found the other senders so i'll check the connections and I understand then this one is redundant !

Oil Level Sensor

What year is this Alpine?
Early cars had a 60 degree oil temp sensor that ran the engine cooling fans at 6 volts maybe this it?
To confirm this remove it and test it in water on the stove with a meter
Great to solve these Alpine mysterys

I think the oil temp sender on the early alpines was in the side of the sump- there is a blanked off hole in the aluminium sumps for this, but its worth checking.
Of course the assembly sequence of the blocks may mean that Renault fitted two sensors to allow for alternative applications ( 25 vs GTA?)
Clutching at straw really (maybe coming out of my ears to beat the wits to it...)

Its 1986, ill try what you sugested and see what temp it activates, would you know where the wire comes from that feeds this ? I havent had the fans on yet, I have replaced one sensor and checked operation by putting the wires together and the fans come on, maybe its not been hot enough !!
