oil level sensor ??

The oil temperature sensor is on the side of the sump on the driver's side. If you short this wire out onto the sump with the engine running, the fans should come on at half speed.
If they fail to come on, your problem will be the fan speed resistor, this cuts it down from 12v to 6v. This resistor, believe it or not, is situated behind the radio on the passenger side. This can be accessed by removing the side panel.
The sensor that you started this thread about on the left hand side of the engine, as Lee said, is used purely as a plug and no wires will have ever gone to this on your car.

I have been looking into this only to find in the `86 manual, there is no mention or pic of this particular sensor (the one first mentioned in this thread). Do we know if this engine is the original fit in the car?
However both Murray & Lee (mettersl) are both right with regard to the oil temp sensor on the early Alp`s which operated the fans, and it was fitted in the sump. as confirmed in the manual :wink:

My Atmo is on an E plate and has a what was left of a sensor in the right hand side of the sump following the rear end damage, where the wiring loom for it is anyone guess though? maybe damaged and removed during repair?

My 1986 Turbo that Cedric now owns has the same sensor in the side of the engine many of the early cars have this its as if renault intended to use it but then decided to use a twin one on the other side . The engine fitted in Muffy s car is the original
