Just to clarify the point regarding driving your car 200 miles for an MOT as this is a point often misunderstood.

Your car has to be roadworthy, not to MOT standard but roadworthy to drive it on the road. That menas if you have say a damaged wiper blade, you can drive it on the road under certain circumstances but if you had no brakes - you can't!

If you are booked in for an MOT and you can demonstrate you are driving straight to the MOT station then there is no issue regardless of distance however you would need to demonstrte just cause for the distance being so great i.e. specialist car needing special repair, car is 200 miles from home when MOT ran out etc.

The law does not permit driving around for any other purpose than getting the car MOTd or repaired.

If you drive the car 200 miles, the chances are nowadays that it will be picked up by ANPR. If you get stopped by the police then they would be foolish to try to procede with a case where you can demonstrate that the car is on its way for an MOT but you need to be able to demonstrate this.

If you get picked up by a camera, then you are likely to get a standard request for drivers details in which case you send the form back completed with an explanation of the reason the car was on the road as well as a copy of the MOT pass or fail cert.

Re insurance, this is another matter that is misunderstood. No MOT means that most policies go back to third party. Not no insurance at all.

Mmmm not sure I would trust an Insurance Company on that one if involved in an RTA. My basic experience/ understanding of an Insurance Company is if you can get out of paying out, do so, they only need to use the slightest excuse. It would then be down to you to prove that it was a legitimate reason for driving the vehicle 200 miles.

I am not saying your wrong but how many times have you phoned a major organisartion and got a different respsonse as to what is possible/available /covered. I think it would be down to a great deal of luck, e.g who deals with your claim.

Yes, if the worst came to the worst you will find yourself in a position where you are guilty unless you can prove your inocense.

My wife was told the other day that she was only covered to drive to work twice a week!! The funny thing is - she works in insurance. Not wishing to call Indians but it was an Indian call centre she was delaing with.

At the end of the day, the question is - do you feel lucky. Personally, I would risk it - in fact I did the other month driving GEO back from Cambridge. 220 miles in a car that had failed its MOT a couple of weeks earlier. I checked with my insurance company if I was covered - they said yes as long as the car didn't have major defects. Well mine was supposed to have dodgy brakes but they freed off in no time.

Yes I passed ANPR cameras, cop cars etc and had no hassle, no letters through the post etc. I had the MOT booked and made sure the MOT man was ready to get a call from the coppers if I was stopped. The benefit of driving back was that I had chance to asses the car properly.

Why is that tow truck do cheap. You could get your money back on that in a month of doing the odd favour. What are the running costs on something like that?

Just to add my three pennies worth...
I worked for the company (German and begins with S :) ) that sells ANPR and the same company that computerised the MOT system.

ANPR will pick up a 'non MOT'd ' vehicle and the back office system checks whether an MOT has been booked for that vehicle. If it has then no problem (regardless of distance) if not then expect a letter.
Also, ANPR is used more and more in patrol cars and not just roadside sites.

I'll just leave these here :shock:
Both turrets are fecked .The LH worst but on closer inspection the Right is not too far behind .Bodged thin plate just sandwiching the rot ...it peeled off so no structural effect at all .
Left it in Mark's capable hands to chop out and make good .I will pull the lump off the subframe ,blasted and see if that needs any attention .I also need to poke at the lowermost rigid waterpipe just above ...

Andy - If you knew me, you would know that I would NOT knowingly have sold the car to Cedric with that much rust on the turrets! I sold the car with 8 months MOT on it. If it was that bad at the time it would have been picked up when it was MOT'D.

Cedric told me the Tester was giving it some proper digs witha big screw driver, I dont like those kind of testers :evil:

I don't suppose Cedric does either :roll: But better to find out now before it ends up being terminal.

Boot full .
It all came apart pretty easily ,greased up and good bushes all round ,only issue was a fecked engine mount that came adrift whist unbolting .

My work here is done until it comes back from the blaster's .Mark is making a start on the turrets tomorrow .
We have also taken off the front gear for a blast and refurb ,new balljoints + ali rad from Mr Dell is in the post ??
Have got some wishbones already prepared as I had a shed load of parts so had them blasted some time ago ,painted ,then put in stock for such jobs :wink:

Back on with Rottbott front end strip then his is off to the blast man as well .Would be better to do it all in one hit but 610 is fighting me a bit :evil:

no i dont but as you say i am happy we found out now. would rather the turrets did not fail/brake while i'm having a blast on a hillclimb or elsewhere :wink:
