Leaking Gearbox

Postby AndyClark » Mon May 23, 2005 5:18 pm

My GTA atmo's gearbox is leaking. It seems to be coming from the right hand driveshaft oil seal. I had both replaced but it still leaks. In a couple of weeks it has lost about half an egg cup full of gear oil. Is it just a case of keeping an eye on it and topping up every few months? I was told that most of them leak even rebuilt ones. Is there anything else it could be?

Where did you have them replaced?

It's a difficult job to do properly or sucessfully if you haven't done one before. It's not normal for them to leak if done properly.

Could be overfilled, obviously if you jack the car up to top it up it changes the level, or if the roll pins are missing from the driveshafts and they can move in or out slightly, then oil can escape out of the splined area. Don't ask why they designed it like this, but that is how it is!

Check that the rollpins were sealed in, they seal with a mastic like substance (CAF 4/60 THIXO .......... yep I had to look the name bit up in the manual)

Mine were done years ago and immediately started leaking again - most garages don't know about this. Paul Sage fixed it a few months later when he took a look and found that the other garage hadn't been applied the mastic, hence giving the symptoms DG described.

A possibility may be that the area in which the seal rubs on the driveshaft has worn a slight groove on the driveshaft .

A google search reveals that Rhodorseal 5991 is an alternative to CAF 4/60 THIXO.

However.....A very nice technical man at Loctite (01442 278100) reccomends Loctite 598 as an alternative, black oil resistant high temp gasket sealer. Available from "some" brances of Halfords. This will also be good for trying to seal over oil seepages of existing gaskets so long as the surfaces are cleaned well first. He advised to AVOID 5940 "flexi-sumint" as this is corrosive to alluminium.
