Speedometer

This topic is unfortunately common, so I hope to find lot of knowledge in the subject. My speedometer is completely dead. Is there a trick to test the system? Does it work that passing a magnet over the sensor and simulate the movement? Have dismantled and move a round the wires and contacts without something happening. Does the XR25 works to prospecting the speedometer? Is there anyone who can help me?

A few questions first Jorgen,
The above quote....I suspect this is a translation problem....I don`t know what you are asking?

When you say the speedometer is completely dead...do you mean just the speedo, or the whole instrument unit?
If it is just the speedo...does the fuel gauge computer still appear to work?
If so...there the speed sensor connector which gives a fair amount of trouble on the inside of the right hand rear wheel arch looking from the rear of the car. R17 in the following picture, this should be disconnected and cleaned with contact cleaner before reconnected. This is the first thing to do :wink:
By the way, is your Alpine LHD or RHD?

Thanks, you guessed absolutely right, everything works except km meter. The car is LHD. Have dismantled the sensor and clean, with no result. Does anyone know if you can put a magnet on a drill and simulate a reaction on the speedometer ?

Wire of speedometers

Someone have work early with the problem... and mount a extra electric wire !? I don´t now if they find the solution. The electric guide are for -86 years model... so that don´t match with my -89... do anyone now the layout of -89 ?

If you look at your picture "C" you will note that there is a misprint with the pin numbering....pins 9 & 10 are incorrectly labled. Count along the center row from pin 6, and you will see that the one before the last should be marked 9, and the last one 10.
If some one has reconfigured the plug according to your picture, then that could be a problem....but you should check that out.
As you are a full member there is a lot of information available to you on these speedos in the "RAOC Members Area" under the heading of "GTA Speedo Faults"...it might be worth having a read of that.

Speedo Sensor

Greetings, I am new to the forum, and only purchased my GTA Turbo two days ago, and I too am faced with the speedo issue. I have already sorted the plug, but cutting it off and soldering the connections. this cured all the dash problems except the speedo, which I now think is this sensor.. Can anyone help me locate this better than just R17? maybe a picture??

Once I have sorted this i will do a write up with photos I have already taken.
BTW I am the guy that purchase the Black GTA from the isle of man, the one that is in need of TLC...

well done for buying an alpine and welcome to the club :D the multiplug on the left hand side of the dash was the problem with my speedo. the grey insulated cable is the feed from the gearbox, open up the pins to make a better conection and it should work :shock: ok well for a while, its a neverending battle keeping it going. i sometimes opperate the electric mirror switch or turn the heated rear window on when the speedo drops to zero.
its an alpine :roll: theres always some thing that won't work but they're great cars. whats the paint and body like 8)

Hi Andy,
The bodywork is showing its age, and there are various blisters and hair line cracks, and I would like to get someone to look at this... but I don't wish to spoil this thread.. I will start a fresh one, once I find someone to help and advise me.
But I do want to fully re-spray the car at sometime.

As far as the grey screened wire for the speedo is concerned, I have soldered it together so no issue with a plug... I just need to trace the wire to the sensor ... Once I find it, somewhere in the right side wheel... still not seen it... maybe it is behind a panel?? It is connected to the gearbox? I just want make sure that there is continuity between the sensor and the speedo..

Sensor is in gearbox RHS just above the driveshaft .
3 wire grey plug somewhere near the wheel arch :wink:

That's right. It's in that group of 3 with the main positive (big fat red lead) that are behind the driver's side (on RHD cars!) rear wheel on the insider of the rear wing, in the engine bay. Right near the air filter on a Turbo.

It's just a 2-core lead from the gearbox and it's worth making sure the connector in the rear wing mounting is clean as although it has water seals etc. it's a bit exposed. Pull it apart, clean up the contacts etc. and that should improve things at that end.
