Weird one - poor idle when facing uphill

Postby Rottbott » Mon Nov 07, 2011 7:15 pm

No doubt this will turn out to be something obvious: I'm getting a very poor idle from cold when the car is pointing uphill. It hunts wildly, before dropping so low it stalls. If I drive the car on to flat ground the problem goes away. First thought was fuel, but I had plenty in the tank, and I got the same result with two different tankfuls. Anyone else had this happen?

Also while I'm on here complaining, the stupid immobiliser decided not to let me start the engine twice, both times right as I was supposed to board the car ferry. As soon as the ferry went without me it fixed itself! How does it know!? :(

Check the idle valve isn't sticking .Probably just a coincidence that it does it on a slope ,no reason why that would matter .A bit of a blast of throttle usually will unstick it .
Immobiliser ??? It always needed about 20 mins when I reconnected the battery before you could attempt to start it .Dunno if that is related but it does seem to have a mind of it's own

How steep is the gradient that affects it? Presume the oil pressure is good?

Could be a coincidence, but it did reoccur as soon as I drove back on to a slope. It seems to have gone away of its own accord now though. Oil pressure was high (engine was cold). Only happened on reasonably steep slopes.

Immobiliser hasn't gone wrong since, I think it's just scared of ferries.

I was talking nonsense (surprise!) about the slope. Died on the flat today at a junction. Dark and wet - high alternator load. So I'll go with Lee's theory. How does one unstick a sticky thingy?

Also, what's a sensible 610 warm idle rpm? I'm getting 400 allegedly which seems low. Can indicate as low as 250 before stalling.

At least I'm probably winning the 'most Alpine miles in November' award. Not happy with brake pads* or tyres yet, and intermittent low boost, but otherwise going really well.

*WHY did they bother with the ABS? It's daft.

†GSD3s front, TR1s rear. Suggestions welcome.

Take valve off and spray though with brake cleaner .Low idle could also be sticky valve or the throttle pot needs adjusting .It has been off so get car warm then lossen the two screws and rotate pot to see if idle increases .
Check battery voltage ,how old is it ?
Intermittent boost ?? Sticking actuator ? Amal valve ??That turbo is a bit tired .....

Now many miles have you put on it now ? Is it out of warranty period

Battery is good. Boost thing is probably the amal valve.

Over 3000 miles since the rebuild... average 22 mpg!
