Distributor cap

Postby Jon K » Tue Nov 08, 2011 8:28 pm

My car has always run quite nicely but has occasionally stuttered when going on boost. Apart from that no problems and plenty of power.

So this week I go to take it for a spin around the block and to get some petrol because I need to take it for an MOT. Once warm it ran like a total pile of crap. It wouldn't start at the petrol station and when I got it going it ran badly. Only 1.5 miles form my house so I made it home fine.

So this evening on checking everything over I thought it would be a good idea to check the distributor cap and rotor and to be honest I was not expecting this.

Image

I am amazed how well it ran for the year given this was lurking in the engine bay. The end of the rotor is totally eroded. I have never seen a cap and rotor as bad as this. The photo really doesn't do it justice.

Anyway Dave has kindly loaned me a rotor arm so does anyone know what is currently the cheapest option for the cap?

I think there have been some posts recently about cross referencing BMW items (or P/Ns)

Hi Paul and Paul,

Thanks for that. I will head over to Halfords shortly and have a look.

I was hoping to get a genuine Bosch cap and rotor but Halfords will be fine given the state of what I have.

I need to change the seal behind the distributor as well as it is weeping so it all has to come off again some time soon anyway.

All done now, Halfords ones fitted.

New cap and rotor was 52 quid if anyone wants to know.

It's running better than ever now.

Did the plugs a while ago (or just done them in mileage terms), it had new but non platinum ones fitted. The correct ones are fitted now.

I would normally have checked the cap and rotor but to be honest it ran really well before apart from a small stutter when going on boost and that was not all of the time. This seems to be a fairly common problem. So it moved down the priority list.

I have a really good history with the car so I need to check if the previous owner has been charged for a new cap and rotor at some point. The car has done 80k miles so I dont know if it possibly the original one but the end of the rotor was totally burnt away.

To be fair to the guy I bought the car from from he was not handy with the spanners and paid specialists what ever they said he needed to to keep the car maintained. He was a very good customer to someone.

Replaced mine earlier. It was missing quite badly and I was having trouble starting it after a short journey. It also cut out (thought it might be the start of the dreaded A610 cutting out problem!) Anyway, checked it and it was a bit grotty although not quite as bad as above. New one on, a 25 mile blast earlier and running as sweet as a nut. :)
