Simon Gregson's GTA

Postby alan4693 » Sun Jan 22, 2012 8:32 pm

Simon sold his car privately in 1998 I have owned it since then. It was originally gold and was resprayed yellow. It is an atmo and I had an interior refurb about 6 years ago. It is off road currently waiting for door hinge repair - when new door skins were fitted at Aiden Pearce they bonded the hinges to to the door frame, so I am having to drill out the pins. I hope to have it back on the road in the spring.

Simon Gregson

In answer to the previous thread about Simon owning an A610 as well, that's not quite correct he bought a new Fiat Coupe 20v turbo after the GTA, which he later traded for a Merc. I know that he had a Ferrari for a while after that. I know he really liked the GTA but it was very unreliable, I have had 1001 problems with it too! I love driving it but it's the most unreliable car I have owned in 45 years of car ownership! (should I be saying this on this site?!!)

Welcome to the site Alan! Thanks for posting this info, very interesting.

Obviously it was confused with an A610 as your GTA was yellow.

Whereabouts in Cheshire are you by the way? Maybe you could join us at a meet this year?

I am in Cheadle, and yes I would be interested in attending a meet when I get my car back on the road!

Specialist Cars at Malton had a yellow A610 when I was looking for mine, it had a crappy yellow re-spray, starship milage and the worst ever gear knob you have ever seen, they said they had taken it in part ex of a Coronation Street actor for a Porsche, this would be around 2002-3 I would guess, priced around £16000!

Not Simon's, I know he definitely never had an A610 but remember that one of the other actors had a yellow A610, I think he was called Adam Rickett, maybe it was his.

I'm still trying tos source door pins for the driver's side. Tired of listening to the sickening thud of the door every time I shut it.
Any recommendations ? Tried the local Renault dealer who were less than helpful ...."GT what ?"....

Simon Auto was going to be my next port of call.

I previously purchased a pair of hinges and one was fitted to replace the failed upper offside one, now the nearside one has failed. That was when I discovered the bonding cockup by Aiden Piers. The garage that did the work did very well getting the old hinge out but it was a lot of work, hence my plan to drill out the failed pin. These are hardened steel so I having to use cobalt drill bits to re bore the hinge halves. If you can source the
hinges it's a straightforward job as long as nobody has covered them in polyester resin!

A friend of mine is going to turn me a couple of pins in his workshop, a bit experimental at the moment, will report on progress!

Does like like Adam Rickett had one...

Us: What was your most recent purchase?

Adam: I haven't bought it yet, but I'm getting myself a car, because I'm going on tour. I'm um-ing and ah- ing between a Range Rover and a Jaguar XK8. My Alpine A610 is great, but it's not very reliable. I just love it, but I'm going to sell it, or give it to my brother.

There are also two bushes in the hinge that are supposed to take up the wear .When you drill out they obviously are lost .
