Looking at GTAs again....

Hi Chaps. I was last on perhaps 3 years ago, and was looking at (I think it must have been Clee) a GTA which was having a 3.0 V6 24v conversion. However, I was very very stupid and ended up buying a 1993 Mercedes SL500 instead - which has been a pile of junk. Currently freshly MOTd but with the roof not working. Anyway, plan is to get rid of it if I can get the roof done, get rid of my Lancia Thesis (which is very nice but not used and not really a car to take out for "fun"). So am back with the GTA bug.

I had originally thought an Atmo would suit me best. I am not a full on driver, so although the turbo would be fun I don't know if the added complexity is for me - especially after the SL and the Thesis.

Anyway, just thought I would say Hi again, and keep track of what is going on. And if Clee reads this, how did the 3.0 conversion pan out?

As an add on, has anyone looked at this one? Not an Atmo I know before anyone points it out!!!

That 3l didn't as the lump ended up in a P4 replica .

The car is still here awaiting a new plan .......It could be put back together as a std Atmo ,I have a std lump and box .It needs paint and recommissioning .Interior is very good though .

I am however just finishing off an Atmo to 2.9efi conversion that should be ready mid month .

If you are in the market for a Turbo then this one is still a work in progress and due end August .Final parts have just turned up but I won't get much time in the next month to crack on too far with it .Engine is due to have heads on in the next couple of weeks and could still go OE up until then , otherwise I'm popping in some higher lift cams and a bigger blower .

I really think an Atmo is what I would want. Don't need the performance or complexity of the turbo. Ok, probably not complex compared to everyday cars these days, but an Atmo is pretty basic engineering.

As a matter of interest - and to howls of derision - could you put an auto box in one mated with the 2.9? Purely out of interest!

Simply ? I don't know .
R25 or Espace V6auto ??Pug or Cit ??Do they exist ? As long as the box will fit in the tunnel area then can't see why not .

Was just curious. wouldn't be worth doing - even tho I am an auto fan. No resale at all I would imagine!

Auto box

A 25 or Espace V6( >92) auto box would be the one to go for, finding a manual one was the hard part! Diff would need to be changed around the other way and linkages fabricated - starts to look expensive and its not exactly renowned as being a strong or reliable 'box either.

Looks a nice example - and well priced if its fault free. My advice if you want a GTA is to buy as late and as good a condition as you can afford. The later cars have a better wiring set up (easy to tell- they have orange instruments not red). And a turbo although more complicated in my opinion is usually far more trouble free. the carbs on the Atmos are fraught with problems unless fastidiously maintained. And parts are now expensive and hard to get so a bargain for 3k can quickly turn into a money pit.

I can source a very good GTA V6 Turbo that needs a repaint but has has a clean fortune spent on all the mechanical stuff by me. Circa £8k 3 years ago and is a daily driver. Just being serviced at the moment inc tappet adjustment.

The Renault is a pretty poor box when it was new never mind when its 20 so odd years old, although if you started with a recon unit.......

Everything is possible, a hybid 2.9efi auto would be very interesting.
I am based in Belfast and have completed a lot of varied GTA work and the though of an auto really interests me.

Shipping to me is £200 + vat if you use a transport company.

All project/restorations that I have undertaken are all on the road being driven and enjoyed.

But you could buy one with Carb issues and fit a Holley conversion to make it very simple.

Having briefly driven one of the A310 Autos I can say, yes you can but why would you?
It turns a good sporty car into a barge and precludes you every driving it in a sporty manner.

Tony, thanks for that tip re Atmo carbs. I had assumed the Atmo would be a simpler car to run, but perhaps a wrong assumption.

The later 4-speeds can't be rear-mounted but the earlier 3 speed as found in the DeLorean can. It's self-contained and requires no external ECU. It's big and heavy and being a 3-speed, has very tall gears and relies on the torque converter a lot. Pretty reliable if looked after and unlike all the modern shite, is user-serviceable! (lots of parts, though not all, available from delorean.com including complete transmisisons - at a price!)

Several DeLoreans have been converted the other way so there may be a few spare transmissions kicking about in the UK.
