There's no great secrets to tuning this engine, its the same with any engine. On the atmos, they fit high lift cams, free flowing exhausts, bigger throttle bodies etc (like our Richard!) and they have got up to around 240bhp, the superproduction running Lucas fuel injection on throttle bodies ran upto 300bhp as Steve said, though at pretty high compression.

It all about getting the air in and out fast and easily enough. The problem with the turbo model, is even though you are ramming the air in, the cams are low lift, and the exhaust manifolds are restrictive, simple as that.

Gas speed basically, a standard GTA at a bar will make around 240lb ft, the one with cams made 330lb, because the gas speed is slow enough at around 3000rpm, that the manifolds and turbo dont create a restriction, and the cams are allowing in over 25% more air. Its only at the revs rise, the torque drops and you get stuck around that magic 300bhp figure because of the increase in back pressure. If you look at the plot, peak power is at 4900, lower than standard, and it drops back to around 270bhp at 5750, but there is still usable power after the factory rev limiter position due to the modified ecu.

I spoke to these guys about freeflow exhausts a while back ,as they've done some nice work on DeLoreans .Guy said the same thing about the manifolds when I told him it was a turbo .He did do a GTA some time ago Red he said ,Tony :?: I think ,but was looking around £500 for the OEM style box but less retrictive .

Yes, atmo wise, Richard has done the lot, and should be well over 200bhp normally aspirated. Alot of the Aussie's using the engine are using the oddfire setup with Turbos, but because of this, are running carbs, or LPG, as Efi is difficult to set up on an oddfire engine.

One guy is running a 2.8 odd fire volvo Prv at 10psi boost on LPG and making 250-270kw at the flywheel (330-360bhp), with better cam profiles.

Thats way down the line!. 280-300bhp is enough to make a very fast car. The emphasis is efficiency, I dont really want to running over a bar of boost, just a decent map, good low end off boost response, and loads of mid range torque. Any more power is going to be costly, heavier, and probably require a higher rev range than the PRV likes.

Torque is what makes the GTA fast, not bhp, so more torque is what you need, and the good thing about the cams, is they move the peak torque right up to the rev range of the beginning of the next gear when you change up! :D

Now, how much would a low milage/rebuilt donor engine be It's got to have more power than a 100k lump ,so would I get just as much by going down that route


Not true, the 100k miler will be better as it will have been stress-relieved, still get it checked though.
It's better to have a seasoned engine IMHO.

the head skim would worry me, why was it done - overheating causing the head to warp probably.


I agree with Tony, get one (new or s/hand) check it with an outside micrometer (what are the correct measurements on this engine?)
Check it for trueness and surface-grind a little if necessary.

This is what I'd do personally.

After seeing a good few Alpines lined up side by side yesterday 8)
I REALLY NEED TO LOWER MY CAR :lol:
They look so much better 8) I even think that this mod will go up the list to before new Turbo :shock:

I saw his car for the first time on Sunday nite, and MY GOD :shock: . You wouldn't need to have a bad back before you drive it, cos you'll certainly have one a few miles down the road!

Its not hard!, Steve, Tony Smith and Tony Law can vouch for that :lol: Truthfully, Richards got his car lower than mine, its just my wheels fill the arches more and it looks tighter..
