MOT

Postby pgoldsmith » Tue Oct 23, 2012 4:53 pm

I though it be a jolly good idea to find out what the most common items our GTAs fail on.

My MOT is due a few weeks time and this would wett my appetite :)

I've just completed the annual 'remove rear pads, wind back the brake pistons' to get the handbrake to hold again.

Done the usual visual checks on bushes etc..

But my real worry is rot, as they seem to be gun hoe on wacking their hammer around underneath.

Well in my opinion rot is now the main cause with the structural box sections in the engine bay being in quite a bad way. Non working speedo, although my MOT tester never seems to check this. Electrical issues - sticking/non working indicators caused by bad earths for example. Atmos suffer emission issues.

Handbrake seems to be the one mine has trouble with every year. I think clee had some fun with one of my callipers.

As Tony says, rot is the other main thing to look for. That shouldn't be a problem for me now that the car is back from RATS.

My Grey car failed on the norm these days for GTA's:

Rot (Jacking points and rear turrets).
Brake lines.
Calipers seized and handbrake.

I'd want to know what was wrong rather than pass and let it get worse. My A610 was passed for a couple of years when it really shouldn't have, and it wasn't to my benefit in the long term...

It's only annoying when they fail for something stupid, like for my VIN plate having fallen off and being kept in the ashtray rather than attached to the car.

Yep Rott

An understanding MOT man is all well and good as long as he points it out and you get it sorted
Left it will eat your car away and in dangerous places .Rear rot and outriggers mostly
Handbrake/binding is always a fail ...Brakelines + fuel lines I'm now seeing a lot of grotty ones .
Electrics mostly stay ok if car used .Oil leaks get advisory mostly unless pissing out .

Cheers, I'll report back on the results after my MOT.

In an attempt to stem the natural course of rot, it has Hammerite brushed on the lower parts of the rear turrets and Underseal on most of the underneath of the car. Just may slow things down.

If it does fail on rot, then it will be low loaded up to Lee !

It passed

Well pleased.

Made some comments about surface rust on the wishbones which I guess either should be replaced or painted.

By the way, made no mention of speedo working or not - didnt matter anyway, as on this occasion it is working fine
