Am I right in thinking that shims are needed to make adjustments? if so where do I get them from? Mr Dell?

They mainly change the toe, easily make some up or get a machine shop to do some if you are stuck.

I needed to know as the car will be paying a visit to my geo specialist (the guy works miracles with string, rulers and chalk!)

The car feels fine, but as rear tyres are so expensive I thought a check was worth it.

I would be interested to know more about this.

My car is on stock OE suspension and I am very happy with it but it does wear the inside edge of the rear tyres.

When it was on the MOT ramp I had a poke around and it looks like there are shims on the bottom arm but previously I have seen discussion about slotting the bolt hole on the top arm in order to get the required adjustment.

If it can be done with shims on the bottom arm that would be much easier (for me anyway)

The bottom shims allow the track of the rear wheels to be set correctly compared to the fronts. On my car getting this right made it much nicer to drive and also got rid of the heavy tyre wear (all 4) that it was suffering from, especially insides at the rear. Its now quite light on tyres (although that may also be because it isn't used much )

The arm slotting is really about lowered cars. When you lower the car the camber angle goes out increasing inside tyre wear. This is caused by the car having unequal length wishbones and stepped out pivot points, so lowering the car puts the wheel in a position expected during some roll (which isn't there).
To correct this you need to adjust the length of the upper wishbone to correct the "flat car" starting position- hence the discussion about slotted wishbones.
On standard height cars you don't need to do this, if the camber is out, something is bent.

Jon, the slotting was to restore the camber angle (reduce the fixed negative camber) after the suspension had been lowered to avoid this:

That's interesting regardingthe slotted wishbones. My car is lowered, are there details on the slotting anywhere? Search just throws up every thread :?:

Thanks for the info Lee and Martin.

I suspect part of my problem is that I have 10 inch rear wheels which is quite large. I know if I left it long enough I would end up with tyres as in Martin's picture. I will try to get them checked out and see where to go from there. Nothing is bent or damaged as far as I can tell.

A small tip - when fixing the shims put them in from the bottom, they are W shaped. If you put them in from the top like an M shape when you come to alter them or remove them you will have to completely unbolt the bottom wishbone.
Best of luck with altering your the geometry of your suspension.

Just saw this. They still list the various shims in a few different widths at Renault but pretty sure last time I tried to order them nothing came through. Happening too often recently!

They are pretty simple shape-wise and easy to refabricate in different gauges of stainless steel. I did this when reassembling mine and just matched the original thickness (only had shims on the offside).

Good thread both. So how come what seems the simplest solution of eccentric top bolts aren't used? Do the Golf items not fit or are they weak?
