GTA not starting.

Postby The Saint » Sat Jan 26, 2013 9:28 am

Help!
Went out to garage after this cold snap, to run up the GTA for tomorrows meeting, and it won't start...
It turns over but nothing else... Took a HT lead off, to look for spark, and nope, so then took coil off to test, and that part is ok. so it's the part that tells to coil to fire...
I have noticed the car was a little lumpy the last time I took it out... more so when I was working it hard, almost missing and then working again, so something is on its way out.. any ideas??
Any help appreciated..
Vince..

Yes ,wiggle the wire to tdc and see if it does anything .Check resistance should be about 230 ohms .

That is the thing on the fly wheel... I would but unsure how to test it,,, I have an AVO but don't know what kind of sensor it is... and don't want to take it off and mess up the distance gap... but yea I was thinking its that..

You don't need to take it off just check at the plug .It appears up near the filler cap into the main loom .

Non starting is more likely to be the distributor cap and rotor arm as GTA's tend to go through quite a few. To check this pull the king lead out of the distributor cap and hold the lead against the engine or something metal (rubber gloves are recommended!) and get someone to turn the engine over. You should then have continuous sparking, in other words the coil is working, the spark is getting to the dizzy but not coming out. The usual sign of the dizzy cap on its way out is a lumpy tickover and poor running. Hope this helps and you get your car ready for tomorrow.

Update..

Thanks for the info lee.. It is the TDC.. when I wiggle the wire it makes and breaks the connection, so its a new one... So this means i wont be able to get to the meeting :( I was so looking forward to it, even got a camera mount so I could do a little recording.. so gutted about that.. new TDC will be here Monday.. :(
The car has just had a full service, new dizzy cap, rotor plugs the lot!! so something this small has P***d me off.. but thats fate..
Thanks again for your help guys...

Maybe on GTA we should modify them to fit like a 610. They run on the base of the subframe and then in towards the gearbox. At least this way it does not get cooked by the turbo.

Thats Alpine/classic car ownership...I know from experience only too well, mine always lets me down when you actually need it or have something planned. On the upside you know what the issue is and it will be fixed without it costing you an arm or a leg
