Avantime V6 Wanted

Postby Paul Tindall » Fri Aug 02, 2013 9:13 pm

Hi folks,

We're looking for an Avantime V6 (Initiale) auto or manual to replace a 'dying' 1996 Megane 16v Coupe (car we've had from new - engine/gearbox still brilliant, sadly the rest of the car is disintegrating!). The Avantime would be for our son Eddy (some of you will know him - he's the Editor of the UK DeLorean Owners Club magazine).

We really would like the best we can find - low mileage and ideally 1/2 owners - not one that has 'done the rounds'!

If anyone out there has one, or knows of one for sale we would be pleased to hear from you.

Many thanks.

Thanks, yes we had seen it when the ad was live. Looks quite worn inside if you look at the trim/carpet shots and the bodywork, if you look at the close up shots, is badly scuffed and marked - thanks anyway, I'm sure that we will find better!

Fair point Lee, and we will be vetting very carefully anything we take a fancy to. However, I can see quite a lot of scuffing (rear bumper), trim 'departure' - look at the driver's seat switch panel etc - more obvious on the 'zoom'. Seen far worse though - look at the V6 newly listed (IOW) on Ebay. Yes they are all 10ish, so we'll have to be realistic, but I do have a very very particular son! Probably in the blood....

To be fair looking more closely at the pics the rear seat belts look mouldy so I guess it's been damp at some stage.

For the money though it looks very fairly priced.

Can't be many minters around anymore, isn't there a club for these Espace Coupe's? Good luck with the search...

Thanks. There is a good club site with loads of data/manuals/register etc etc - most of the best cars are owned by enthusiasts as you would expect. We have been offered a few through the Avi Club Forum, but price expectation is unrealistically high for what are deemed to be low mileage good condition examples. However, prices are hardly into Alpine territory fortunately. We'll find a suitable one sooner or later!

Went to see our first AVi today - described as ' a lovely car in very good condition with an excellent interior'. Well, not in our book, by a long chalk! Every panel was scraped or marked with striations that probably would not cut out. Looked like the doors had repeatedly been opened by driver and passenger with a bunch of keys in hand, such was the chipping and wear on the interior handles, and the aluminium trims around all consoles were all dented and scraped. Loads of things didn't work properly, but the engine was as sweet as a nut - not enough I'm afraid to offset the negative aspects. I also spotted that the heater matrix was leaking (Stephen warned me about that - apparently a difficult, and potentially expensive fix).

So, this is going to be a challenging search, but I simply do not subscribe to the view that a 10 year old car will inevitably be scuffed, scraped and worn.
Most of my cars are much older, much much tidier, far less worn yet all well used. Even the other day I was collecting bricks from a local reclamation yard in my R26 (daily runner) - the lad who helped me was a R5Turbo fan, and was very interested in the R26 but couldn't believe that I was carrying bricks in it (but I don't have any choice really). However, I then showed him the triple thickness blanket in the boot, draped over the sill, which when lifted revealed the 'as new' carpet underneath. Trouble is, folks don't always look after things - used, or even well-used does not have to be synonymous with abused!

A lot of the trim in avantimes is very fragile and there are some design and quality issues which mean that nearly all cars will suffer from the following problems even if cared for: dented metal door trims (v6) dented drivers door card (all) chipped and peeling door handles (all) - these are solid metal though so can be stripped, split and damaged seat belt covers (seat section), damaged drivers seat cushion near seat belt.
